the thing about john mulaney is i can’t decide if he’s uncaring or just plain stupid. there’s no way he could be ignorant of the chapelle controversy, and does he not realize that the demographic who would be upset by that are the very reason he’s a household name? his popularity basically revitalized standup comedy among the Youths. and yet i can’t think of a single other comedian who’s been given so much love, so much word-of-mouth, so much relevancy. if he had any sense he would have turned his wholesome wifeguy schtick into a wholesome dadguy schtick. he’d have been forgiven for everything surrounding the divorce about twenty seconds after his next special dropped on netflix. it’s too soon to tell if this thing is gonna stick, there’s still room for a well-crafted statement begging for forgiveness and i guess we’ll see what the reaction is to that if it happens. but my god what a way to destroy your most devoted fan relationship.
