maybe Butch Faustus(tm) is about being stuck. Maybe he was scared he was going to get stuck in a rut and that the only way out was a deal with hell, only to figure out at the 11th hour that this damned him to what he feared most. Misery loves company. Femme!Meph smoking even if she’s had enough smoke in hell, just because smoke is familiar. The idea that *all* familiarity, no matter what context it’s in - traumatizing or painful or wretched - is, on some level, comforting, and this is what Gets people when they end up in hell (metaphorically, psychologically…literally?). Tossing in my headcanon about Lucifer & Meph being exes and how Faustus’ arrogance reminds Meph of Lucifer & that’s making her fall (in love) all over again. Hell is being stuck. Hell is never changing. Hell is being in a hole and it gives you pain but you can’t get out of it because the hole is all you know now. The only thing you can do is drag others deeper in. Hell as a crab bucket.
