On the subject of Shoichi-Might-Be-Evil, I’ve had this on my mind since episode 18 and I need to get it off my chest.
Shoichi and Akira are foils of each other. I’ve talked about this before, but just to reiterate and expand on them:
Akira is (currently) employed by the largest corporation in Den City. Shoichi is self employed, owning a small business.
Akira holds a very high position at SOL; at least as Security Manager, he had dozens of workers at his command. Shoichi works in fast food, and without any assistance.
Shoichi looks like he slept in his clothes. Akira always looks well put together.
We have reason to think Shoichi lives in his hotdog truck; since this is where he spends most of his time, you can say he’s usually home. Akira lives in a very high-end apartment, but is never home.
Akira’s closest relationship is with someone he isn’t close to at all—Aoi, his sister by marriage. Shoichi’s closest relationship is actually close—with Yusaku, someone he has no relation to.
We have no reason to believe Akira has any living blood relatives. We know Shoichi has at least one, his brother.
Assuming the boy in the flashback is indeed Shoichi’s Brother, they look very much alike. Aoi and Akira look nothing like each other.
Shoichi works outside the law. Akira works within it.
And since I made that post (circa episode 8), even more can be added to that list:
Akira’s job situation has been precarious since episode 8; he’s faced both demotion and termination. So far, nothing’s happened to threaten Shoichi’s livelihood at Cafe Nagi.
Akira and Aoi were orphaned ten years ago. We currently have no word on Shoichi’s parents (*cough*KogamiIsShoichi’sDad2k17*cough*).
Shoichi helps Yusaku/Playmaker from behind-the-scenes, and has a great deal of faith in him. Akira would rather Aoi not fight at all.
Shoichi has been without his brother for (presumably) ten years. Assuming Aoi isn’t one of the Lost Babies, she and Akira have never been apart.
Akira thinks of hacking as “dirty”, probably because of the work he did for the yakuza. Shoichi has no such complex, and is borderline proud of his work as a hacker.
Akira’s emotional intelligence is severely lacking. Shoichi is far more sensitive.
Shoichi has no friends or allies in his age group. Dubious as it is, Akira has at least one—Ema.
Unless provoked, Shoichi doesn’t think of his brother often, and usually seems more concerned with Yusaku’s wellbeing. Akira’s entire life is centered around Aoi.
See what I’m getting at? I really, really can’t see this as being one massive coincidence. I would venture as far as to say this dynamic was/is at the forefront of the creator’s minds.
With that said, which of these two was at first cast in an antagonistic light? Which one did we think was going to be the corporate crony, the morally bankrupt brother who would surely break his sister’s heart? The one who, as far as we can see now, is none of those things?
And who was the one cast in a positive, heroic light? Which one did we think was going to be the wholesome, good-natured, pillar of stability in the life of our protagonist?
The one who might not be any of those things?
