Not an ask about Dany, hope it's ok. I'd like to know your opinion about the complaints some people make when the show casts an actor that doesn't resemble the character they are going to play. I saw it with Gwendoline last season, people said she was too pretty to play Brienne, but IMO she did a great job, and I think that's what matters, I mean Isaac doesn't look like the Bran from the books, Peter doesn't resemble book Tyrion, and yet they play their characters very well. What's your opinion?
I agree with you. I think I’ve said before, when the complaints about Mance casting came out. I truly don’t care if the actor has a physical resemblance to the character he/she is playing. I don’t care. And I find it preferable to cast an actor who can play the part, rather than to look the part.
If all the complainers’ appreciation of a performance is reduced to the looks of a character, then those people forget that what matters is the acting, not if the actor looks like what they had in mind.
I guess you can try to cast an actor to fit both, looks of the character, and good acting. But is not always easy. If I were to cast someone for sure I will go with the most talented actor, rather than book resemblance. And if we consider that the producers keep making statements on how this is a tv show and not a book purist adaptation, then they should know for sure, is better to get better actors, rather than a guy or girl who happen to look like the description on the books.
Though it is possible to find both. I think Michelle Fairley comes close to what I particularly imagined (and since they aged the characters on the show, the complaints about her age were pretty stupid, or they were just stupid and ageist to begin with), and she’s a good actress. I think Conleth Hill has that too, maybe there are a few things that I would consider different, but still. And there are other examples.
Gwendoline Christie is perfect for the role imo. She has physical qualities that are not easy to find. And make up did the rest of the job. She’s pretty, but sometimes the aid of make up, and the style they give her, is what brings an actor closer to the looks of a character, and maybe helps a bit to the performer. E.T.A: On her performance, I wasn't always sold on. But she did an ok, and she improved as the season moved forward. I think she embodies the role to perfection though. Cause her body language is perfect, and is just how I imagined Brienne to be like.
I would have preferred some actors on the show not looking like the books description, if they had found someone better for role in terms of talent. Which I think they did, or at least they had options. But decided to go with the actors that look the part, rather than to play the part well.
