The day Alex takes Marty to his place turns out disastrous. Jennifer's comments are inappropriate, Mallory teases far more than she should, and his parents don't even bother trying to hide the ridiculous grins on their faces at Alex's decision to break tradition (even if it's in a tiny, tiny way).
"I'm sorry," Alex says, as he leads Marty to the door. His smile is sheepish, and he hopes it displays just how much he feels about it. "Sorry that you had to deal with Jennifer."
"It's okay," Marty replies.
"I'm sorry about Mallory, too."
"It's okay."
"And my par--"
"Alex."
Marty's voice is a little stern, and Alex's head turns to look at him properly. Marty grins and reaches forward, knuckles of his fist lightly brushing Alex's cheek in a mock punch.
"Today was great," he assures.
Alex clears his throat. "... Yeah?"
"Yeah." Marty beams, flyaway and perfect and more confident with himself than Alex can ever be. "Promise."
