"tell me about a complicated man. muse, tell me how he wandered and was lost when he wrecked the holy town of troy, and where he went, and who he met, the pain he suffered on the sea, and how he worked to save his life and bring his men back home." odysseus was a greek hero famed for his intellect and cunning. he created the plan to sack the city of troy using a giant hollow horse. he is also famous for his long odyssey, or journey, trying to return home after the events of the trojan war.

narcissus was a hunter from thespiae in boeotia, who was known for his beauty. according to tzetzes, he rejected all romantic advances, eventually falling in love with his own reflection in a pool of water, staring at it for the remainder of his life. after he died, in his place sprouted a flower bearing his name.

persephone, the daughter of demeter and zeus, was the wife of hades and the queen of the underworld. she was a dual deity, since, in addition to presiding over the dead with intriguing autonomy, as the daughter of demeter, she was also a goddess of spring and fertility. the myth of her abduction by hades was frequently used to explain the cycle of the seasons.

achilles was a hero of the trojan war, the greatest of all the greek warriors. he was the son of the nereid thetis and peleus, king of phthia. patroclus was a childhood friend, close wartime companion, and the presumed (by some later ancient sources) lover of achilles.
