James, as much as he hates children, is always first and foremost an adult. A twisted version of an adult that is painted by what upset children think of them but still. So when his indulgences lead to his first child he didn’t really have a choice but to raise them because while he could kill her and that would likely be kinder she is his responsibility. He certainly doesn’t give his children a good life, he treats them like his crew on the best of days, but he does the things parents are required to do.
