But you shouldn't be! I always think there's a whiff of macho culture creeping in when even fangirls start dissing Romantic things. That same old "emotions are embarrassing and fluffy (=girly)" kind of thing, you know? Fuck that. GIVE ME ALL THE GRAND MELODRAMATIC GESTURES AND SWEEPING SONGS.

I’m not a huge theater nerd, but I grew up around enough of them to know that if you wanna look smart you need to say that your favorite Broadway musical is, like, one of the more miserable and commercially unsuccessful Sondheim shows, but it’s not! It’s not! It’s The Secret Garden! IT’S ALWAYS GONNA BE THE SECRET GARDEN, YOU GUYS!

When I was a kid I stuck that soundtrack in my alarm clock and woke up to it in the morning. I refused (and, on a certain level, still refuse) to listen to it during the winter because I thought it had the power to melt the snow. It took me years (years!) of denial to finally admit that the kid who plays Colin just isn’t very good. I listen to “Winter’s on the Wing” every May 1st. I’m always gonna love it, fight me in the PIT!

(If you want my commercially unsuccessful, semi-obscure favorite, it’s By Jeeves, but that’s Webber, so I get no snob brownie points for it.)
