An affair with Samson seems impossible to me. Where there is love, there is compassion. Samson does not need this. He is too proud and can take it as a humiliation. He needs a goal and motivation to live and move on. Samson wants to be in demand all over the world, and not just one person. Do not judge strictly, these are just my thoughts.

I’d argue that Samson has too much compassion, but it’s been misused!

Personally, I imagine the biggest hurdle of romancing Samson would be making him believe he’s worthy of attention and affection, without making it look like his partner is pitying him. That pity would make him shut down, hard. He won’t take pity during his public trial and he wouldn’t take it from someone he holds close to him.

Well, with that accent ask it was more about Samson's accent regarding our world. I mean, it sounds a bit Australian, the way he slowly speaks words, as if he is chewing them. And how pronounces the words ending with "r" like the order, he says, "ordah."

Oh! I’m assuming the real-world equivalent of his accent is a generic English accent. His voice actor, Gideon Emery, is English so I’m guessing that’s the basis for Samson’s accent.

I’m in the US so don’t have an ear for the different regional accents in England but considering the game is from a Canadian company for primarily North American audiences, I’m assuming Samson has a generic-ish rough, lower class English accent.

Yeah, but Samson got REALLY fucked yo by A LOT of red lyrium. He’s outjunkied the junkies by a long shot. Like he’s consumed so much red lyrium that it would’ve killed most people, let alone regular lyrium. Plus he’s a dick who made his choice.

I mean, he wears armor infused with red lyrium. Like armor he wears all the time. He’s definitely a junky amongst junkies.

Since you made this reply on my post, I’m taking this as open to discussion:

This is a myopic take and I’d urge you to rethink what you’ve written here with a critical eye towards causality, political power structures within the game, and the interpretation of addiction as a character flaw.

As in my original post that you left this comment on, Samson’s addiction isn’t what makes him a villain. Him being a dick has nothing to do with however much lyrium he takes. He’s a dick, like you said, because of the choices he made.

What choices? He made a choice to join Corypheus (I’d argue this was made under duress), he made a choice to attack Haven, he made a choice to kidnap villagers from the Emprise du Lion, he made a choice to grow red lyrium in not only them but some of his own men, and for those reasons - he is a villain. Like his song says - his martyr rage consumed a lot of people, including himself. In his effort to rid Thedas of the Chantry, an organization that chewed him up and spat him out (as he says during his trial), he was willing to kill innocent people. These are the choices he made, and this is what makes him a dick and a villain.

Lyrium ingestion is forcibly imposed as a divine burden to be borne by every southern Templar. All southern Templars are addicts, all of these Templars believe they will die (and they do, or wish they did) if they don’t have lyrium. Cullen is the first to detox completely from it. Because all Templars are addicted to lyrium, one being singled out for it and being called “The Junky” is at best obtuse, and at worst, an indication of how addiction is portrayed as a character flaw, instead of state-sanctioned violence by the Chantry, within the narrative and within the fandom.

It only took me a hundred years but I finally figured out a key reason why I like Samson’s story so much in DAI: It’s a revenge story.

He’s doing all that he’s doing for revenge against the Chantry on behalf of him and every southern templar. He wraps it up in righteous anger and is willing to martyr himself to enact that revenge, but he’ll have it regardless.

My entry for the 2016 Fallout Big Bang, exploring the idea of Deacon’s story about Barbara being an allegory for some bigger and deeper fuck-ups he took part in. The longest piece I’ve ever written and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. I enjoyed taking this slowly simmering idea and turning it into fiction.

I wanted to explore a time where Samson’s compassion paid off and didn’t get someone hurt or killed. I made myself cry with this one.

How Does Your Garden Grow (Dragon Age: Inquisition, Gen)

I saw a great prompt in the Samson tag one day, and had previously thought about how boring it was that the Inquisition never had an opportunity to confront templar atrocities. Why not use General Samson as a means to mete out justice against rapists and sexual predators like Ser Alrik? An antagonist to punish an antagonist.
