i agree with the sentiment, but tbf there were other factors here. it was a WEIRD show for NBC to pick up. it was a WEIRD WEIRD show to be on network in general. it had shit-ass advertising, in no small part because they changed the fuckin title so last minute that it was actively confusing? it was so last minute that ALL of our materials just say ‘odyssey’ including the dang sweatshirts. plus it share a timeslot w GOT. there were a LOT of factors that sort of fucked this show from the start.
Yeah... NBC generally sucks and seems to always have... Sucked. Minus ER. And yeah, the last-minute change to a DUMB name (I am also wildly unpatriotic and actively recoil from “America!!!” things, so maybe that’s just me.) was ridiculous and unnecessary? But it’s just “Odyssey” in the UK, yes?? And I hardly remember ANY advertising, though to be fair I rarely watch network TV & certainly not NBC.
BUT.... (unpopular opinion under the cut)
The whole “I ONLY SUPPORT THE MILLISECONDS OF ANYTHING ALEX IS IN” attitude/behavior is so fucking frustrating. No, they wouldn’t have been big numbers that would’ve made a difference, but they could’ve/should’ve been guaranteed numbers for the show. And I feel like this happens with Alex stuff... Fairly regularly. (Like, for example, when people get bent out of shape about the results of a poll but they’re also the same people who can’t be bothered to vote.)
Of course... This kind of attitude pisses me off regularly in ALL aspects of life, not just... With Alex stuff. It’s a thing. AO & the loss of a different character that Alex probably could’ve chewed on had they expanded her role just happens to be THE thing I’m looping back to at the moment.
*sigh* Basically, ridiculous me thinks people should actively support projects Alex works on in their entirety and as they are happening -- esp. the precariously perched things that NEED support like AO & Chasing Shadows & Upstairs Downstairs -- so she can be on them in the future. And yet...
(Not that people are going care about the loss of this character... And I’m not saying this attitude is the sole or even a true contributing reason AO was axed. But I am saying employing this attitude is proooobably not a great way to go about getting Alex to recur on things. ANYWAY. You know what I mean.)
