I think Nieyao should be a little more unhinged even in modern AUs. They're constantly quarreling but not in a manner that anyone other than Xichen can understand. Any room they're in has enough tension to cut with a knife. They're feral about each other but in opposite ways. Nie Mingjue will call out Jin Guangyao over and over again and may call him a slur in the middle but also the only other person he will remotely allow to criticize his husband is Xichen. He hasn't got the best mental health because of his genetic disease and it's obvious. Jin Guangyao also has poor mental health because of all the falling down the stairs but he's masking so hard no one knows. His father thinks he's the Jiang Fengmian to Nie Mingjue's Yu Ziyuan. His father hates his guts but he's too useful. He loves little SangSang and is genuinely horrified on his behalf when he feels homicidal about Mingjue so he masks so hard he starts looking like a creepy doll which in turn sets off Mingjue's alarm bells. Only Xichen is allowed to say anything to oppose Mingjue. Xichen has no idea what is going on but he's got scissors and duct tape and fuck him if he doesn't do his best! And then Xue Yang, Qin Su, and Su She show up. The relationship blows up into smithereens. Xichen cries more about their breakup than either of them.

Actually, i think of a lot of the reason i accidentally made myself ship 13 and eleanor shellstrop is it fixes everything that makes me squicky about 13 kissing a girl In narrative. Like, i Hate women throwing themselves at the doctor not matter what regeneration, but Eleanor??? Eleanor is perpetually horny, narcissistic as fuck enough to want to make out/definitely more than that with somebody who looks so similar to her and absolutely Would be into 13′s nerdiness whether she admitted it or not. And eleanor would constantly drag her and lets face it, 90% of the time the doctor deserves being dragged. 

Plus, the idea of watching 13 react to Eleanor coming onto her so blatantly is amazing. And Eleanor is the doctor’s type, too.
