My Opinion on Raceswapping
Honestly, I'm chill with characters from comics having their race changed as long as this guideline is followed.
1. They weren't already a person of color. So if a character is Black, don't make them Latin, etc...
2. An exception to 1., It's chill if they character isn't a heavily built upon character, to add an ethnicity, using the last example, say a character is black and usually a background character. They have no story. They only support the story so far. Now, a writer wants to make them a side character or even give them their own story. Now they need a background and say the writer wants them to be Latin? Boom, Afro-Latin. It doesn't take away representation. it actually adds more.
3. If the character is white and the character does NOT have a specific ethnicity, that's important to the character. Ex: Irish Catholic. There are characters who, being Irish Catholic, are important to who they are and their background. (Ex Matt Murdock aka Daredevil) then it's fine. You're not taking away representation
4. There are also ethnicities that don't really have a specific race. And that can be a bumpy road, for example, a Jewish character. You could change their race and keep them Jewish, and that could be okay. Honestly, that still can depend on the background of the character.
5. AND THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ONE. If you have to completely rewrite a characters personality, then you shouldn't do it??? If you think making a stoner coded character, Black might be racist. Don't rewrite him into a walking D.A.R.E ad.
Basically, if you take away representation, you failed. If you have to completely rewrite character, then you have failed.
characters, I think, were done well
Jimmy Olson in, My Adventures with Superman is done well. They didn't completely rewrite the character. He's still a little nerdy, dude, who is besties with Superman. And in the ways they've rewritten him, they also rewrote the others. It's a unique story compared to other Superman stories.
Bow from She-Ra and The Princesses of Power. Bro was from Alien Planet, him being Black, which literally changed nothing with his character. Him being a teen stole his fantastic mustache. I'm sad we didn't see Future Bow with it in the ending.
Lois, almo m.a.w.Superman, her being Korean, also does not impact her character. This isn't actually the first time she's been Korean. Usually, she's Wasian in that circumstance. It's just the first time she's has a darker skin tone and a pixie-cut.
Ariel (2023), she's still a ginger fish lady with really good vocals. And she's OG Ariel approved so stay mad.
DCEU Aquaman, him being Polynesian, adds to the character and doesn't take away, so it's also chill.
Nick Fury in the MCU, it didn't really change anything with his character and honeslt Samuel L. Jackson just made him more Iconic. Let's be real.
Sunspot in the comics is one of the first Afro-Latino characters ever. This is the second or third time they've erased the afro from the equation.
They completely rewrote Jimmy Olson for the Supergirl series. As I said with My Adventures with Superman's Jimmy, if they kept him in character and a little nerd, he would've been cool.
Norville(Shaggy) in Velma, as I said before in 5., he is completely rewritten to not be Racist, which at the end of the day is still Racist? Honestly, that whole show is a shitshow feeding Alt-right men want they wanna see. From what I've seen in clips. Which is Mindys wholse thing so whatever I guess. I'll keep waiting for it to be canceled, so good shows stop being canceled.
