‘ WHY I GOT YOU ON MY MIND ! ’

pairing: steve harrington x gn!reader

summary: after the break up, you try to find ways to keep steve out of your mind. but one night you just can't stand the aching feeling of his absence any longer.

warnings: angst, angst and more angst, no happy ending in this sugars ♡

writers notes: first i wasn't sure to post this 'cuz my insecure ass keeps holding me back so i will just post this to loose my "fear" of writing shit idk lol. just to be clear, this is with season 1 steve y'all!

"it's okay" you reassured yourself for the tenth time on that cold night "just say the car broke and you didn't know who to come to… yeah… that might work"

your heart found it hard to believe that you were in front of your ex house right now planning to come up with a stupid excuse to be there, but your mind kept reminding you that he wasn't 'your ex'. he was steve. your steve. the steve that always had your back, the steve that was with you in every important moment of your life and no matter how hard you tried to make yourself accept the fact that everything between the two of you was over, you still didn't get it.

the denial had such a strong grip on you that before you could realize your hand reached for the handbell, the sound of it echoing into the harrington residence.

"hey emma, i'm sorry i was -" he stopped mid sentence when his eyes met yours, for a moment you saw a glimpse of… something in his eyes but then, as quickly as it appeared, it was gone.

"guess i'm not emma." your voice sounded hoarse and tired even for yourself, but considering the fact that you didn't have one proper night of sleep in almost two weeks it was understandable.

that was the amount of time you've been apart. two whole weeks. and there you were, in his front door like a street cat waiting to be invited into his house… into his arms…into his heart.

"yeah, i see that... what are you doing here?" steve's eyes looked over your shoulder and it finally hit you that he was expecting someone that night.

and your heart sank.

tears formed in your eyes as you tried to form a phase in your mind, but all you could imagine was he with someone else and your mouth externalized your feelings in what it sounded almost like a supplication for something you knew deep down he couldn't give you: "i- i just wanted to see your face again."

steve's eyes were filled with emotions that you felt he wanted to explain and you expected him to say something, do something but before he could you heard steps behind you.

"hi baby!" a voice called and you didn't even bother to look at the direction from were it came to know that it belongs to the so-called emma. she walked over to steve and hugged his neck in the way you used to do before giving a quick kiss to his lips that made all the breath in your lungs disappear. "who's this?"

his eyes didn't leave yours for a fraction of a second and you couldn't help but let one single tear cascate down your left cheek as you shyly smiled at the beautiful girl in front of you.

"i'm just.." you fought to find the word to describe what you were to steve and he was quick to remind you of it.

"a friend." he said looking you deadly in the eyes with a silent request for you to leave.

and as you walked back to your car your mind finally understood that you and steve were never meant to be.
