piece I did for Vertebrae's rp blog to showcase her shadow manipulation ability

silly ramblings below cut

this ability is a remnant of Vermin's shadow hands which was heavily inspired by Don't Starve Vertebrae's is obvi just much more pliable being able to make not only hands but also wings, tentacles and insectoid legs and similar to Vermin's shadow hands Vertebrae can use her shade to travel. She's able to cross into any space in any location, world or even dimension that shadow can be found. It's partly an excuse to for rp shenanigans but also in her story she's meant to be able to travel into a void space where she lives in a castle between the living world and the demon realm so it just makes sense to include reality breaking dimension hopping lol

Vertebrae's shadows appearance is also mega influenced by Void from Hollow Knight if that isn't apparent aha it's not as drippy but it has a similar particle effect so you can pretty easily tell if she's being a lil creep watching ya from the shadows the gold in the shade is from Vertebrae's own blood which the shadows took a fancy too which is why they're so willingly allowing Vertebrae to use them. The void isn't like fully sentient like a shadow monster or anything it's just a thing with a sort of magical willpower I guess. It only likes Vertebrae cause of her blood and if she hadn't accidentally given it a taste of it when she first came into being it likely wouldn't be an ability she has at all. It's just a lovely lil coincidence that a trait from Vermin happened to find it's way into Vertebrae

finally settled on a name for Vertebrae's story and new hashtag to go with it

Story is 'Para Familia' aka 'For Family'

and the new hashtag all posts concerning her story will be under *gigglingbones

Since I wrote about her on my discord server I'mma slap this info here as well lol

Some lore on La Muerte from Vertebrae's story -

La Muerte governs the land of the dead and cares for all the souls of those who have died. She's incredibly similar to how she's depicted in 'The book of life' movie if you've ever seen it

She's sweet, loving and cares for all souls. She also has the power to heal and save people from death though she doesn't use it unless she knows the soul isn't meant to die yet.

La Muerte is a massive gambler (again similar to The book of life version lol) and loves to make bets and wagers.

She also drinks a lot of alcohol, this coming from the whole tradition of leaving an offering of alcohol on ofrenda during Dia De Los Muertos. She's the one who gave Vertebrae the recipe for the pomegranate blood wine among others!

La Muerte is fully aware of Vertebrae's entire past and how she's not the original soul that her body hosted, aka she knows it was Mr. Tricksters. She knew the demon clown for years as they often hung out and played cards together. This is how Mr. Trickster won La Muerte's blessing/curse. He beat her in a card game and so he was given her healing powers.

She doesn't tell Vertebrae anything about her past because Vertebrae's still alive and needs to figure it out on her own but La Muerte likes to visit her monthly to check in as she's pretty fascinated by her. She's also slowly working to potentially crowning Vertebrae as a goddess herself one day.

La Muerte usually only speaks Spanish unless she realizes those she's speaking with can't communicate with her so she switches to English/whatever language is required, she even knows ASL and many ancient dead languages.

She can also change her appearance by shapeshifting to appear as a commoner and walk among the living. This is how she's met her previous mortal husbands/wives and she's had hundreds of mortal descendants by doing this. The skulls on her crown + gown are from her direct descendants. Aside from wearing their remains she doesn't give them any special treatment though and none of her descendants have any of her abilities or are godly in anyway. They're just normal humans.

this is all I have atm but I may add more or change things as I continue to develop her :>

I freaking love that trope of two souls being eternally bound no matter what or who they are/become.

Which is why I'm glad I decided to sneak in the shade for Vertebrae's story. I was wondering what I'd do to include a Pancreas alt into her story or if I even should and boom inspiration in the form of her literal freaking shadow.

Obvi the shade doesn't love Vertebrae like the twins love Vermin nor how Pancreas loves his partner

but it doesn't need too, it can just enjoy being around her and being her loyal companion. Her shadow. Constantly by her side and helping her with her goals just because it enjoys seeing her happy.

It fills the same niche but in a brand new way and in a way I hadn't written for a previous Pancreas alternate either. In all their previous forms they where always the lover never the best friend or simple loyal companion and it's refreshing to write them this way.

When first making her blog I was incredibly tempted to make Vertebrae Pansexual / Aromantic to have her as an even split between Vermin and Mr. Trickster

but now I'm thinking I may alter it so she's Demiromantic

Cause as I keep mentioning she's her own individual person. Not either of her past minds or a true fusion of them. So realistically she shouldn't fully mirror them in most aspects of her personality.

I still got a lot to develop about her tbh and things may change or alter as I figure more things out but really that's incredibly fitting for her character as she's still figuring herself out as well.
