BAD HISTORY WITH ✨ME✨

One of my favorite passages of Mexican history is when the Conservative Party in Mexico decided after the Independence (1810-1821) that we needed a European prince to become Emperor of Mexico. And they campaigned in Europe to find a good one - while the country already had a president 🤡.

And then I think the French helped through Napoleon III’s wife so they ended up bringing an Austrian Prince (ta-dah?) Ferdinand Maximilian Josef Maria von Habsburg-Lothringen. Now known as Maximilian I of Mexico. He was crowned at the Cathedral of Mexico City (idk the date, there won’t be a quiz, okay?), he brought Charlotte of Belgium with him! I mean, he had to, she was his wife after all… Empress too! (Lol)

Anyway, sad story: he had some descent ideas for laws that would help the indigenous people however you know conservatives didn’t like these ideas… I personally believe the nail in the coffin was that he was trying to be recognized as head of state at the same time as Benito Juárez was president. Benito Juárez was a very strong political opponent, and he was recognized as head of state by the Americans too, which didn’t help even with the backing Maximilian had from the French. There were many groups against the monarchy - and the French, which he and Charlotte were strongly tied to. He never stood a chance (read about this on your own, it’s kind of interesting).

I’m going to skip ahead a lot! In the end Maximilian got charged for conspiring to overthrow the Mexican government and carrying out the Black Decree (a law that said if you were caught fighting the empire you would be executed within 24hrs. Understand this: we had issues with the French; this is (I think?) related to the Battle of Puebla aka la Batalla de Puebla aka 5 de Mayo which is the date when the Mexican Army defeated the French who wanted to invade Mexico led by Napoleon III).

ANYWAY Maxi here got executed in 1867 (it’s okay, this I googled). If you guys are wondering Charlotte went back to Europe in 1866 and she lived a long life having survived her time in Mexico.
