hello i really like ur meta and discussions! i'd like to ask what you make of sam's comments in folsom prison blues about the victims not being "innocent" and how "easily dean seems to fit in." a lot of hellers use that as an example of him not being woke enough, or classist, and i'd just like to know your opinion on the whole thing
i appreciate the question! honestly, and maybe too bluntly, i think the whole thing is quite silly and is founded on a fundamentally different understanding of the show and its structure(s). sam aliusfrater has a really amazing and thorough post about this here (much better than anything i'll be able to put together), but essentially a) i think the 'wokeness' of supernatural characters (especially hunters) is arbitrary and focusing so intensely on it leaves a whole deeper meaning to the show & hunting unexplored. i am way more interested in discussing other factors of the way hunters view their surroundings, particularly the difference between human and (perceived) monster and dean's role at the top of the existing hierarchy. b) the question that immediately comes to mind when i see this argument is what differentiates a human who has killed someone from a non-human who has killed someone? given that they would usually actively search out the latter to kill them, i think it makes sense for sam to point out the variation in dean's thinking & perception of 'innocence'. i have always seen sam saying 'innocent' as, not him saying they deserve to die, but him moving towards this idea, especially in context of his s2 arc where he's processing his supposed ontological evil & his own potential Necessary Death. and c) sam's next line starts with 'look, dean, just be straight with me, all right?' so i would even argue, discrepancy in innocence aside, he's also just intending to question dean's motivations & get dean to be honest with him about why he really wants to be there (dean ends the conversation with 'now, that means something to me, and it ought to you. i'm not thrilled about this either, man, but deacon asked us to hunt this thing down, and that's exactly what we're going to do.' it seems to end up being more about the familial Expectation and the hunt. in some ways, dean is just using helping the prisoners as his usual justification, which he knows is means something extra to sam.)
i wish i had more to say about sam saying 'does it ... bother you at all, how easily you seem to fit in here?' but i don't know if i've considered it enough (i haven't seen people be upset with sam about this line before, so i can't speak to their specific arguments). i think it's more meant to juxtapose dean saying 'nah, i just think it's a little creepy how good of a fed you are.' in 02x12. i think it's more about the difference in how they approach hunting rather than sam being 'classist' or implying that he's better than dean or whatever people are saying.
