hi caesar! i brought you a sunflower! i hope youre doing well! ♡
“I’m doing absolutely splendid- especially when I’ve been given such a lovely gift from a woman quite as magnificent.”
Hi, I was wondering if it is possible that VFD killed the Baudelaire's parents? And maybe Count Olaf himself hinted at it in The End when he says,“Is that what you think"when they finally accuse him and“You three children are the same as when I first laid eyes on you.You think you can triumph in this world with nothing more than a keen mind,a pile of books, and the occasional gourmet meal.”He's clearly berating them for having the same mindset as firefighting VFD's who aren't innocent.
Hi, @tg-allthingsfashion-blog! I copied the second part of your question below:
In reference to my earlier question, maybe the Baudelaire parents weren’t truly on the fire-fighting side? I mean they did live in a neighborhood filled with fire-starting VFD members safely the entire time. Even Esme S didn’t murder Beatrice the entire time and it was pretty obvious they did not like each other. Maybe the fire-fighting side discovered their treachery and set the house on fire as revenge?
Phew! That’s a lot to take in.
Admittedly the entire topic of what exactly happened on the day of the Baudelaire fire gets hazier and hazier the more you delve into it. The topic of Olaf’s responsibility has been brought up many times (Link) (Link). Also the fact he probably did burn down the house could be related to the Schism or the sugar bowl (Link), but it’s entirely possible he acted on his own as well. The fact that the Baudelaire parents essentially invited him into their house just makes the matter more complicated.
The idea that the Baudelaire parents were actually on the fire-fighting side would explain why they managed to live safely for so many years, yes, but it doesn’t truly hold up. Beatrice and Bertrand were on Olaf’s allies’ death list ever since Lemony tried to denounce his crimes in the Daily Punctillo.
Sunny could not bear to look into the eyes of the manwith a beard but no hair, and instead looked down at his shiny shoes.“So this is Sunny Baudelaire,” he said in hisstrange, hoarse voice. “Well, well, well. I’ve heard so much about this little orphan. She’s caused almost asmany problems as her parents did.” He stood up again and looked around at Olaf and his troupe.“But we know how to solve problems, don’t we? Fire can solve any problem in the world.”[The Slippery Slope, Chapter Six]
Naturally in V.F.D. no one can truly be sure whose side a member truly answers to, and some people navigate somewhere between the two as well (Olivia Caliban, Arthur Poe, etc.). But the Baudelaire parents are one of the few people whose loyalty seems solidly established in the canonical text. I don’t see why they would work for people who want them dead so badly. If they offered them information, they clearly didn’t get any protection in return. And there’s no evidence of any such betrayal.
On a more practical level, I think the reason they stayed alive for so long had to do with the sugar bowl. Beatrice and Bertrand were probably the only persons in the world who knew where it was hidden, so their enemies couldn’t just murder them until they had that information. Perhaps they were also scared that they might use the sugar bowl against whoever opposed them. This is why the fact that Olaf was supposedly invited into their home is so important.
