“Dad? Daaaad.”
“Huh?” Hyunjin groans tiredly as the sunlight worsens his headache tenfold.
His daughter stops jumping on his bed with a frown. She reaches under his bed and finds just what she is expecting: empty bottles.
“Uncle Minho says you need to stop drinking these,” she scolds, holding one of them up.
Hyunjin swipes it from her hand. “Like he’s one to talk. Besides, you’re not allowed to touch these.”
“Daaaaaad,” she whines into his ear, making it feel like it is splitting.
“What do you want?” he groans, lifting her up to give her an airplane ride and to keep her from jumping on his spleen.
“Uncle Minho also said if I annoyed you, you’ll stop drinking those things. Is it working?”
Darn Minho and his negative reinforcement, Hyunjin scowls. Spending time alone with that man is going to have to be on the list of things his daughter is NOT allowed to do from now on.
“What do you really want?” sighs Hyunjin, referring to why she is crushing his ribs at eight in the morning anyway.
“Uncle Jisung is taking me to Jolly Land today, remember? He told me to say goodbye before leaving.”
As if on cue, Jisung raps his knuckles on Hyunjin’s door frame twice, effectively catching the two Hwang’s attention. “Ready?” he asks.
“I am!” cheers the little one.
“Did you remember the sunscreen?”
The child’s eyes widen, and she runs out of the room, presumably to fetch sunscreen. Jisung shifts his attention to his friend on the bed.
Hyunjin speaks first. “Jolly Land again?”
“We all have different coping mechanisms.”
“Yours is a lot healthier than mine,” the brown wolf laughs dryly.
Jisung walks over and places the empty glasses bottles into a box for later recycling. “You know you should really stop right? It’s not a good influence on her.”
“Don’t worry. I only drink when I’m alone.”
“And there’s your problem.”
“What? You’ll join me next time?”
“Only if you don’t go overboard.”
Hyunjin sighs. “How did you do it, Jisung? I mean, when your soulmate left.”
“Well I wasn’t old enough to touch alcohol yet,” Jisung jokes. “But really, you just learn to live with it.”
“Does it get better?”
Jisung fiddles with his friend’s bracelet, something you had left for the latter in your will, before answering, “Sometimes. Like when you find that special someone again.”
“I’m ready!” a childish voice screams from the hall.
Jisung casts one more look at his melancholy brother. “And I think that someone’s a lot closer than you think.”
At that moment, Hyunjin’s daughter bursts excitedly into the room. Jisung sweeps her into his arms, brings her over to her dad, and dips her forward so that she can give the hungover wolf a peck on the head.
“Bye Dad!”
“Bye Sweetie,” Hyunjin smiles. “Don’t stay out too late; it was a new moon yesterday, so it’s still pretty dark tonight!”
“Don’t worry. We won’t,” chuckles Jisung.
And then they’re gone.
There aren't too many things that can excite a child as much as beating a high-score in a 3D-shooting ride.
“Uncle Jisung, Uncle Jisung! Guess what?” The child stops when she realizes the older wolf is not listening to her.
“Did you find something interesting?” she asks with her head tilted to the side.
“Yeah,” Jisung breaths.
His hand is held shakingly on the sleeve of the other side, pulling it half-way up the arm. On his previously-plain wrist is a ring of golden shapes and patterns. He looks up and sees a young woman looking at her own wrist in confusion.
“Something very interesting.”
