Plums

It’s June and the lizards are crowding the sidewalks again. The plums in the backyard are growing back, emerging in timid clusters on the lower branches. I noticed them one day and saw double their quantity the next morning.

I told myself I should wait until picking them, but they’re crowding the branches like the lizards on the warm concrete

     and the thought occurs      that if I plucked some now, more could grow.

In this way the tree and I are sisters,

     both of us asking the hands of our mother      to strip some of the fruit away, make room      for the ripening.
