England put themselves in this position when they had the upper hand. They literally had a lead yet instead of attempting another goal, England just hung back and let themselves be attacked consistently and have to defend over and over instead of any attempts at an attack or counter. Attacking or holding on to possession is also a form of defense which England chose to not do. Instead, they keep letting Argentina have possession and attack their goal consistently and at some point the ball will go in! And now they’re desperate for a last minute equalizer instead!
Objectively, that was a decent match with a relatively consistent ref.
Things that make the results even worse and me annoyed at the result
Bayern Munich's streak of having players in the WC Final since 1982 is broken, even though they had the second most number of players represented in this WC at 17 players. THAT IS WHAT I'M MOST UPSET ABOUT!
ENGLAND DID THIS TO THEMSELVES!
Instead of pushing forward with their lead and attempting another goal, they didn't hold on to the ball and let Argentina have possession and attack their goal consistently. No matter how good of a defense they think they have, at some point the ball will go in because England's defense would need to hold 100% of the time while the other side only needed 1 moment and they got 2!
MBappé dropped to second in the golden boot race.
