Survey for travel guides reveals startling ignorance about nation’s musical history
Survey for travel guides reveals startling ignorance about nation’s musical history
The Daily Telegraph | 8 Mar 2024 | By Anita Singh
ONE in five Britons is unaware that the Beatles came from Liverpool, according to a survey into the nation’s knowledge of music history.
Two in five do not know that Oasis hail from Manchester, and more than half have no idea that the British punk scene originated in London.
The survey of more than 2,000 adults was conducted on behalf of National Rail to mark the launch of a new set of travel guides exploring Britain’s musical heritage.
Jo Whiley, the Radio 2 presenter, narrates the stories of 30 cities and the “music gems” they contain.
They range from the well-known, such as the Cavern Club in Liverpool, to the more obscure. [..]
Doncaster gets its own guide as the home of former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson and singer Tony Christie.

Lewis after qualifying P8 in Saudi Arabia | 08.03.24
“It’s similar to previous years, I would say. There are so many elements to this car that are better, but we’ve been hindered by the bouncing that we have. The bouncing we have through 6, 7, 8, 9, 10… Probably affected George. It’s something they haven’t been able to fix. We made some changes overnight and this morning the car felt so much better. I was regaining confidence again, and then we get to qualifying and it disappears again. But George was doing a great job, he’s a lot more comfortable in the car. Similar to the last couple of years. But, we keep our heads down, we keep working. I’ve got a bit of a better feeling where the issues is coming from so I’ll try and adjust it with the team.”
We thought the bouncing was gone? “We’ve tried every set up change, we can’t get rid of it. It’s difficult to explain. We had some bouncing in Bahrain, but nowhere near as intense as here. That first sector is super high speed, a lot of lateral load, and the bouncing really offsets the car quite a bit. Your balance shifts forwards and rear wards [as the car bounces] and if you’re doing that at 170 miles per hour, correcting that each time… For example Max is flat through 6, 7, 8 and the balance is just stable. That’s what we’re working towards. We gotta fix it, three years in a row. We gotta get on top of it.”
