Desmitificando la palabra OK
Contrario a la leyenda popular urbana la palabra OK no proviene de la Guerra Civil significando “0 Killed”, la historia de este monosílabo utilizado comúnmente es distinta.
¿Qué palabra utilizas cuando quieres decir que todo está en orden?
“Ok” es probablemente la primera palabra que pensaste y eso es lo que piensa la mayoría de la población mundial. Ok es seguramente el monosílabo más utilizado a nivel internacional, se estima que más está presente en más de 500 lenguas y en diversos dialectos. Es prácticamente imposible que nunca lo hayas usado, visto o escuchado.
La aparición de esta palabra data de los 1800 cuando un grupo de intelectuales en Boston decidieron crear un código de frases abreviadas que contenían errores ortográficos como “OW” significando “Oll Wright”. Cabe destacar que la mayoría de los códigos creados por estas personas quedaron obsoletos y el único sobreviviente fue “OK” significando “Oll Korrect” (todo correcto).
Este americanismo fue promovido y utilizado como estrategia de campaña por un candidato a presidente llamado Martin Van Buren. ¿Por qué escogió tan singular eslogan? Lo hizo porque su apodo era “Old Kinderhook” haciendo referencia a su lugar de natalicio, Van Buren aprovechó el doble sentido que tendría OK con respecto a sus iniciales y su forma de promover su campaña presidencial.
La próxima vez que alguien te pregunte que significa o de donde proviene este término, ya sabrás que decirles.
