1.3.1 proving to us all that Les Mis is a comedy first and foremost, a collection:
"The brilliant deed committed by M Lynch was that, being the mayor of Bordeaux on March 12, 1814, he had surrendered the city a little too soon to the Duke of Angouleme. Hence his peerage."
"The French Academy gave a prize theme, The Happiness Procured by Study. M Bellart was eloquent, officially."
"The bookseller Pelicier published an edition of Voltaire under the title Works of Voltaire, of the French Academy. 'That will attract buyers,' said the naive publisher."
"Dupuytren and Recamier quarreled in the amphitheater of the Ecole de Medicine, and shook their fists in each other's face, over the divinity of Christ. Cuvier, with one eye on the Book of Genesis and the other on nature, was endeavoring to calm reactionary bigotry by reconciling fossils with texts and making the mastodons support Moses."
Like this chapter does a wonderful job of portraying the frenetic energy of the Bourbon Restoration, and how much Paris stood at the crossroads. But it's also just really funny tbh.
On the one hand, this chapter can be fun because yay French history!
but on the other hand:
The worst part is I’ve tried to do research and can’t find the context for certain references

Brick Club 1.3.1, 1.3.2
Two years later...
There’s a lot of French history packed into these pages, and I absolutely cannot untangle Hugo’s references and will not try.
It’s made clear this is a time of growing wealth and culture, accompanied by the disregard of polite morality in the upper classes, unsurprisingly. Revolutionaries are out and royalists are in. And is this Abbe Gregoire, “the infamous Gregoire,” the same G the bishop talks to?? That’s be amazing.
I like this: “there are neither little facts in humanity nor little leaves in vegetation.”
And we are introduced to our duple quator (or quartette as Wraxall translates, or quartet as we would actually say in English), a group of moneyed men currently keeping the company of a group of grisettes. The women are in a unnervingly precarious situation, which, as we know, will become clearer over the course of this book. Hugo goes ahead and labels Fantine ‘wise’ and the other three women ‘philosophical,’ which seems backward, but more of that in chapter IX.
I want to mention the naming of Fantine and bring attention to the scene in the Arai manga. Hugo says, “She received her name as she received the water from the clouds on her head when it rained” and we see this gorgeously depicted by Arai.
Poor Fantine, her life is truly a painful circle; she ends up just where she was first found. Damn you, Tholomyes, you selfish coward. I’m reminded of The Great Gatsby and how the rich “careless people” in that book destroy the lives around them heedlessly, almost unknowingly, just to ensure their own standing.
Morning Workout || Sango + Takara || CLOSED
When Sango opened her eye, her vision was rather blurry through the tears that had started forming as she was shook from her dream. She let out a long wavering breath, though tried to keep it quiet so Sorrel wouldn’t notice her moment of weakness. Unlike most mornings where she would immediately hop up out of bed, and go prepare for the day, she simply laid there, allowing the tears to pool and fall down the side of her face. She had been trying so hard not to break… Not to let anything through, but… that dream kinda kicked her ass.
Once the tears had dried up, and she had full control of her breathing again, she sat up, and tossed her legs over the side of her bed. She was fine. She was- she felt her lip quiver. She needed something to get her mind off of this she needed to be doing something… Anything.
Grabbing her eyepatch case, she moved to the dresser, and pulled out her swimsuit. An early swim a few laps would help her wake up, and keep her busy. It only took her a few moments before she exited the bathroom in her suit, and was ready to go.
When she arrived, she leapt feet first into the pool, arms above her head, allowing her to reach the bottom, where she kicked off and resurfaced closer to the middle of the pool. The water wasn’t near as chilly as she had been expecting what with the air temperature… in fact it was rather nice… comfortable. From here, she began taking her laps, focusing on speed and power. Her form wasn’t great, but there was a reason she wasn’t the SHSL Swimmer.
The pool was doing its job… And even if she did shed a tear… How could anyone tell. Even the swollen redness of her eye could be attributed to the chlorine. Everything was good. She was okay, she was alone, and she was- Sango paused in the middle of the pool hearing someone else’s footsteps break the relative silence of the morning.
She remained treading water near the middle of the pool. She figured if whoever this had taken Monokuma’s offer to heart, this was the safest place she could be… It’s not easy to fight in the water, and she was the strongest swimmer here… Unless maybe Chieko or Sorrel had her beat.
“Hey. Wasn’t really expecting to see anyone else here this early.” She looked the individual in front of her over. Swords? This must be the samurai... “Hiiragi-san was it? G’mornin’.”
At the Ministry of the Navy an investigation was opened concerning that ill-fated frigate The Medusa, which would cover Chamarieux with shame and Gericault with glory.
