Eponine but she wasn't jealous of Cosette for getting Marius, she was jealous because Cosette got to escape that trainwreck of a home, she got a rich father who showed her love and gave her everything she wanted. Older Cosette became spoiled and loved, just like little Éponine and Éponine became abused and miserable, just like little Cosette.

i love the shift here, from “in rags” to “in mourning”. when your sole focus is survival, to the point where it is your only purpose, things like mourning do not exist. it’s completely inaccessible to you. the full spectrum of human experience was denied cosette by keeping her basic needs unmet.

i see a lot of people rightfully complaining about some of the worst fanon mischaracterizations in the les mis fandom (like the trope of enjolras being out of touch and naive and grantaire just being a realist, or Javert Was Right All Along propaganda to name a few). but to me, the funniest & relatively harmless example of mischaracterization is when people get so immersed in modern au les amis-centric stuff that they forget what's in the actual book, and accidentally contradict the crumbs of personality that les amis have in canon. one time i saw someone say grantaire's favourite subject in school would be math
