Nothing to say except this is such senseless cruelty from men who are on top of every pecking order in this world. Not to ignore the social forces driving this trick, but also fuck Tholomyes.
I know the men leaving is a raindrop of plot in the bucket of this novel, but the way they chose to do this is cruel and cowardly to an astonishing degree.
The more experienced women are resigned to this, with some indication that this isn’t entirely unexpected, and no doubt they have made preparations for just such a thing. It seems like this is the way things run in these circles, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be furious about it.
What’s wrong with telling the women you’re leaving? Leaving at least Fantine with a lump sum that I know Tholomyes can afford, since there’s no way he didn’t know Fantine had a child because there’s no way Fantine wouldn’t have told him. Especially since we know she expected him to stay. I mean, I know the answer: pride, social standing, a lack of decency, etc.
I’m upset that Fantine never got the chance to be a good mother to Cosette. I can’t ever blame her for her circumstances and what she had to do, but I wish she could’ve stayed with Cosette, figured something else. It’s hard to say, but I feel like they could’ve made a better life together than what they managed apart.
