I’m having that moment where I found someone I like, and I know I’m fucked because I genuinely want to hang out with them more to know more about them.

#99Seconds Event - Philadelphia
First Unitarian Church 2125 Chestnut Street
99Seconds is an event that honors the experiences of survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Its name originates from the sobering statistic that in the United States a woman is sexually assaulted every 90 seconds and battered every 9 seconds. By combining these two statistics Truth In Reality is promoting the little known fact that in the U.S. a woman is a victim of gender-based violence one to eleven times every 99 seconds. Domestic violence, a form of gender-based violence, is a pattern of behavior in which rape and sexual violence is often deployed against victims. In honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month we're holding this event to raise awareness about the impact of domestic and sexual violence on our community and directly challenging rape culture and victim blaming by highlighting the stories of survivors. #99Seconds aims to break the silence on gender-based violence and to directly tie in how domestic violence and sexual violence are normalized through the complicity of the entertainment industry. #99Seconds gives survivors a space to publicly reframe their experience by using the event as an opportunity for them to begin Redefining HERstory for themselves. (Please note that male survivors are open to participate and share their stories as well.) At the start of the Program, the host will frame the context for the event (script is included in the #99Seconds Run of Show available for download). Next, a brief synopsis of domestic violence and sexual violence statistics are shared on the screen or read out loud by program organizers. After this portion of the event, survivors in attendance would be given the opportunity to speak and tell their story to those in the room. At the conclusion of the event, attendees hold a moment of silence for 99 seconds to honor those we have lost or have been impacted by domestic and sexual violence. Schools should ensure that counselors are on hand to provide assistance to anyone who is triggered by the event.

CALL TO ACTION
OCT 20 - NATIONWIDE
#99Seconds Event
Truth In Reality, in conjunction with the Ferguson Response Network, has partnered to host our signature #99Seconds event on October 20, 2016 in ten cities across the U.S. The name #99Seconds is based on the fact that in the US a woman is sexually assaulted every 90 seconds and battered every 9 seconds.
This national initiative to honor the experiences of survivors of domestic and sexual violence is being held in light of the recent controversy around director, writer and actor Nate Parker's film Birth of a Nation and his sexual assault trial. With very little exception, the entire narrative has been focused on the accused perpetrators. Truth In Reality CEO Sil Lai Abrams and Ferguson Response Network founder Leslie MacFadyen decided to partner on this initiative in an effort to challenge society's tendency to erase or silence victims and survivors by re-centering them and providing a platform for their voices and experiences to be heard.
The current list of cities hosting events (in formation) are:
New York, NY
Houston, TX
Chicago, IL
Charlotte, NC
Baltimore, MD
Grand Rapids, MI
Washington, DC
Minneapolis, MN
Exact locations and times will be announced shortly.
