At the suggestion of DFB President Bernd Neuendorf , the shareholders' meeting and supervisory board of DFB GmbH and Co. KG today decided to release national coach Hansi Flick and the two assistant coaches Marcus Sorg and Danny Röhl from their duties with immediate effect.
Bernd Neuendorf: "The committees agreed that the men's senior national team needs new impetus after the recent disappointing results. We need a spirit of optimism and confidence with a view to the European Championships in our own country. For me personally, it is one of the most difficult Decisions in my term of office so far. Because I value Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people. But sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. Therefore the decision was unavoidable."
Rudi Völler says: "Hansi Flick has worn himself out over the past few months; he and his coaching team have given everything to turn things around for the better after being eliminated from the World Cup in Qatar . Unfortunately, we have to say today that we didn't succeed is. The Japan game clearly showed us that we can no longer progress in this constellation. This is not an easy moment for me, because I joined the DFB in February to support Hansi Flick with all I could and to have his back to keep him free so that he can be successful in sport. And I firmly believed that as national coach he could manage to get our national team back on track.
But now we have to act responsibly, we have to change something in order to be able to play the demanding and ambitious role of host at the European Championships in our own country that we all hope for. That's what the fans in Germany rightly expect from us. I will therefore temporarily look after the national team for the one game against France, with Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagnerby my side. The most urgent task will then be to hire a national coach who will quickly realign our team and prepare it for the big European Championship tournament next year, from which we all hope that there will be positive impulses for German football and also for our entire country. A national coach who will then, in the long term, raise the national team back to the level that we know and expect from it."
At the international match next Tuesday in Dortmund against runner-up world champions France, Völler, Wolf and Sandro Wagner will look after the national team on a one-off basis. The aim is to arrange Hansi Flick's successor as quickly as possible.
