The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates in spring, and sometimes again in autumn. It migrates from North Africa and the Mediterranean to northern Europe in May and June. In fact they are some of the only butterflies that lay eggs that last all though winter. In the next season small nocturnal green caterpillars eat the sorrel and eventually become butterflies themselves.
