4 years ago (yesterday) @thirty7foxtrot asked me to be his wife by showing me the ears on the left, then told me to wear the ears on the right. Which typical me thought, "but what if I said no?" Then he got down on his knee and all I heard was "You are my best friend..." This photo sums up the way I've felt (well, my first impressions at least) of a lot of the material we've covered. I was especially confused in the opening paragraphs of Beloved. It took me a little while to realize that the dialogue was constructed of broken english, rather than how I initially read it, which was as a weird concoction of abstract thoughts. This got me thinking though; it's kind of strange the way we understand things based on the way we initially perceive them. To think of the dialogue as conceptual made little to no sense to me... but the same words took on meaning simply by recognizing them as something a little more familiar (and reading it with a southern twang.) I'm not sure why or how the brain operates this way, but I think it is something to remember and consider for future reference, when inflicted with utter perplexity, whether this be with the context of written material, a foreign language, or both.
