June 3, 1965 astronaut Edward White on his 21 minutes spacewalk outside the Gemini IV spacecraft. Ed White remained secured to the capsule by a 25-foot umbilical line and tether wrapped in gold tape. The space helmet had a gold plated visor to protect him from unfiltered solar arrays and on his chest sat an emergency oxygen pack. The "Zip gun" is in his right hand. The June 18, 1965 issue of LIFE magazine showcased astronaut Edward White’s spacewalk on the cover. On June 3, 1965 tied to a 25-foot long tether, Gemini IV-pilot Edward White stepped out of the two man capsule and performed the first US spacewalk over White used a hand-held maneuvring unit “Zip gun” to move around and reentered the spacecraft after a total of 21 minutes. Both James McDivitt and Edward White wore the first astronauts to wear an American flag on the shoulder of their spacesuit, the first crew to do so.
