60 years ago... Astronauts with Speedmaster CK2998 In 1963, at least 3 NASA astronauts owned an Omega Speedmaster CK2998 chronograph ; Walter “Wally” Schirra, Donald “Deke” Slayton and Leroy “Gordo” Cooper. Thus far the earliest NASA photo showing the Speedmaster CK2998 on the wrist of an astronaut was dated December 1962 and by June 1963, all three were spotted wearing a Speedmaster. So these could have been CK2998-4, produced late 1961 to 1962. This June 1963 photo shows chief astronaut Donald “Deke” Slayton wearing his personal Omega Speedmaster CK2998 without bezel during jungle survival training in the republic of Panama. May 27, 2020... Launch scrub for the SpaceX crew dragon Demo-2 mission at Launch Complex 39A Cape Canaveral - Florida. While SpaceX astronaut Robert Behnknen clearly wore an analog-digital Omega X-33 Speedmaster over the left forearm of his white-grey spacesuit, his colleague astronaut Doug Hurley wore a wristwatch underneath the lefthand glove. From 1963 onwards, NASA astronauts were allowed to wear the Jacoby Bender Champion steel mesh bracelet. This kind of lightweight bracelet could be easily torn apart if the astronaut got stuck with his wrist in the cockpit or capsule. These steel mesh bracelets became the ultimate accessory for 1960s pilotwatches and were worn until the 1990s Space Shuttle missions.
