60 years ago... Astronauts with Speedmaster CK2998 In 1963, at least 3 NASA astronauts owned an Omega Speedmaster CK2998 chronograph ; Walter “Wally” Schirra, Donald “Deke” Slayton and Leroy “Gordo” Cooper. Thus far the earliest NASA photo showing the Speedmaster CK2998 on the wrist of an astronaut was dated December 1962 and by June 1963, all three were spotted wearing a Speedmaster. So these could have been CK2998-4, produced late 1961 to 1962. This June 1963 photo shows chief astronaut Donald “Deke” Slayton wearing his personal Omega Speedmaster CK2998 without bezel during jungle survival training in the republic of Panama. Slayton still wore the bezelless Speedmaster as far as June 1965 ! (Photo: NASA)
