US naval officer Richard Gordon was Command Module Pilot of “Yankee Clipper” during the 4th mission to the Moon, the 2nd to land men on the lunar surface. Essential aviator items, fireproof Nomex gloves and straight bayonet lightweight sunglasses together with a classic Omega Speedmaster 145.012-67 chronograph. In 1967, prior to flying on Apollo 7, astronaut Walter Cunningham worked with an Australian ophthalmologist to develop lightweight and durable sunglasses for the Apollo astronauts. However, the lengthy process required to get the design flight-qualified by NASA proved too much and NASA choose to use American Optical Co. sunglasses, a model with a long history of use in the U.S. military. September 10, 1966 Gemini XI command pilot Charles “Pete” Conrad and pilot Richard “Dick” Gordon shared a joke in the white room enclosure atop Complex 19 awaiting word as to whether the autopilot problem on the Atlas launch vehicle was solved. Note the presence of the backup crew Neil Armstrong and William Anders. Conrad wore an Omega Speedmaster chronograph on the right arm while Conrad wore an Omega Speedmaster and a Glycine Airman wristwatch. The Gemini XI launch was postponed to September 12 1966...
