ANNA AND SAMUEL PINANSKI TEACHING PRIZE SPRING 2014 Nominations Accepted April 7 – April 16 (4:30 p.m.)
The PINANSKI TEACHING PRIZE is awarded annually to members of the Wellesley College faculty to honor excellent teaching across the curriculum. Faculty, staff, and students may submit nominations that offer specific, illustrative examples of excellent teaching. To be eligible for nomination, faculty members should have taught at least one course at Wellesley since the 2010-2011 school year. An individual may make multiple nominations for different faculty and previous nominations may be resubmitted.
Prize winners are announced at Commencement. Citations describing the particular forte of each recipient will be read at Commencement so that the descriptions can serve on that occasion as public symbols of the College’s regard for their high quality teaching. Citations are written, in part, using language from the nominations.
In the past, the prizes were awarded with reference to the three academic areas of humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Recognizing that a number of faculty are appointed to interdisciplinary departments, reference to these three areas will no longer guide committee recommendations.
The Pinanski Prize Committee, composed of past prize winners and three seniors selected by the College Government Student Organization Appointment Process, works with the chair of the committee to prepare prize recommendations for President Bottomly. This year, faculty members include: Tracy Gleason, Professor of Psychology; Lisa Rodensky, Caspersen Associate Professor in the Humanities and Associate Professor of English; and Orit Shaer, Clare Booth Luce Assistant Professor of Computer Science. Student members include: Katherine Leung, Shirin Maani, and Kendrick Smaellie. Class Deans Jennifer Stephan and Joy Playter chair the committee.
Nominations may be submitted electronically through MyWellesley. After logging in, select the tab for your group: students, faculty, or employment services (for staff). In the Administrivia section, select Pinanski Teaching Prize Nomination.
The nomination process closes at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, 2014.
Former Pinanski Prize winners are ineligible candidates for a subsequent Pinanski Prize award. The list of current ineligible faculty includes:

Beehive Design Collective Presents: Mesoamérica Resiste
THIS IS A FREE AND RAD EVENT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Thursday April 10, Anderson Forum The Beehive Design Collective is an all-volunteer, activist arts collective dedicated to “cross-pollinating the grassroots” by creating collaborative, anti-copyright images for use as educational and organizing tools. They work to translate complex global stories shared through conversations with affected communities. The Beehive Collective uses giant, portable murals to deconstruct complex issues of globalization, climate change, colonization, and resource extraction. They strive to provoke discussion, raise hard questions, and share hopeful stories about actions big and small we can take to build a better world.
Posters and merchandise will be available for purchase on a sliding scale during and after the event.
The Mesoamérica Resiste graphics campaign is the third and final image in the Beehive’s trilogy about globalization in the Americas, focusing on resistance to mega-infrastructure projects that are literally paving the way for free trade agreements that devastate local economies and communities.
In 2004 an initial group of Bees traveled from Mexico to Panama over 5 months to meet with people on the frontlines of resistance to a regional development plan then known as Plan Puebla Panama (PPP). The announcement of the PPP in 2001 had sparked powerful cross-border organizing against its industrial scale mega-projects, like super-highways, dams, and power grids. In the following years our ongoing, intensive grassroots research took a variety of forms, from large international gatherings to local round tables, from interviews to informal conversations. The stories in the graphic come from current struggles, but are also rooted in the legacies of over 500 years of colonialism in the Americas. A banner across the top reads, “Every time history repeats itself, the price goes up” – reminding us that we are in an era of extreme loss of cultural and ecological diversity and rapid climate change. Through the lens of Mesoamerica, the graphic tells the big picture story of what’s at stake across the globe with the neoliberal model of “development,” and what we’ve already lost. This project reflects efforts to go beyond illustrating just the bad news, to also sharing stories of collective action and inspiration. The inside of the poster tells stories of grassroots organizing and community resilience. A multitude of characters symbolize strategies and tactics for building and defending autonomy. We’ve depicted over 400 species of insects, plants, and animals that are native to somewhere between Mexico and Colombia, giving a glimpse into the incredible biodiversity of the region.
