10 minute play saga
The last assignment, before the final portfolio, in my creative writing class is the writing of a 10 minute play. Last semester my play was a bit dreary and my goal this semester is to have something a bit more upbeat. I have set my play on a commuter train in Washington state, because I love the west coast, but am stuck on the over crowded east coast. Any-who... I write the first scene to share with my class today and they had great feedback. This was wonderful, because dialogue is not always my friend. I tend to sound too stuffed-shirt, almost as though we were all born with a dictionary on our tongues. The part that bummed me out was when the class was asked by my instructor where they thought the play was going. Suddenly I am being given many cool ideas. They felt like there could be a situation about to unfold where the passengers needed to come together to survive, or maybe they were really super heroes. Like I said, really wonderful, and fun ideas, but really this is a simple play about the re-connection of two friends that haven’t seen one another since they were 9 years old. I, however, think it is really cool to be reunited with a long lost friend and it is just a 10 minute play. Does this make me old??
