Season 10, Episode 6 | Sympathetic Reflex [2022]
Adam Ruzek & Kevin Atwater in CHICAGO P.D. 10.06 "Sympathetic Reflex"
Chicago PD 10x6 “Sympathetic Reflex”
Random thoughts:
That’s twice now this season they have started out an episode with Kevin talking in the phone to Jordan. Is this just a small attempt to show that Kevin still has a family life outside of work, something they haven’t done very well in the past. Or is this a lead up to us actually seeing Jordan in a episode(s) this year? I hope it’s the latter.
Can I just say here and now that Trudy is the best and steals any scene she is in. I love seeing her in more places than just behind the desk, but to that end she needs an entire episode dedicated to her! “All Cylinders Firing” from season 4 is still one of my favorite episodes and is basically the only time in over 9 seasons that Trudy gets a whole episode centered around her.
Is it just me or does Torres not take a deep breath when instructed by Kevin in the circle of cadets? In other shots you can clearly see the others shoulders rising as they breathe deep, but Torres seems to stand there stoically not moving an inch. Is that a sign that used to living in and dealing with tense situations and maybe even thrives in them? Or I’m just trying to read something into it.
In retrospect, Torres heading out with Kevin after the class makes his white tshirt in the class make sense. But at the start of the scene it felt like the writers trying to joke about Torres only wearing white tshirts.
Nitpick moment: I know it’s a tv show that is more concerned with supporting the narrative than real life. But in this instance, and most that I remember, when an intelligence member is there when someone appears to pass out or die, they never perform CPR. Which in real life they would do. It might not save them but it would at least be attempted.
It felt like Voight covered up the victim when he saw Hailey coming out of sensitivity to her current mental state with all that she has been dealing with recently. A subtle gesture that to me speaks volumes about how much Voight does care. I like that they are continuing investigating Sean in the background, but that Voight refocuses Hailey on this current case.
Loved Adam’s sarcastic exchange with the unhelpful store clerk.
Is this car jacking case a call back to the first episode when the team was investigating another car hacking crew when Voight made them drop it for the drug case? Or just a coincidence?
I thought the writing and acting were excellent in the scene with Kevin and the two suspects. Kevin did everything he could to de-escalate the situation, and it just goes to show that even when you do everything right sometimes things can still go horribly wrong.
Loved that Voight told Kevin to take a breath before talking to IRT, calling back to the beginning of the episode.
In the car chase Kevin again does the right thing by stopping pursuit, and yet things still go wrong when the boy crashes.
The Chief gives Kevin a viable way out with “sympathetic reflex,” but Kevin, of all people, is never going to take the easy way out when he knows he did nothing wrong. I thought it was interesting that Trudy attempts to get him to consider it and Voight remains silent. He knew Kevin would never go for it, just as he knew that Kevin did nothing wrong during the shooting.
Al use to be the go to undercover guy - it feels like Torres is headed in that direction, and I love it! Torres fits in so well with the team. It feels like he has been there for more than just a few episodes. In season 7 I was never able to buy into Rojas as a member of the team, so in the beginning I was worried about them bringing in Torres, but I have loved his character so far and can’t wait to see what all they have in store for him.
The final scene was excellent. Kevin stoically taking the father’s unfair words and then his empathy and compassion with the mother were perfect. Shout out to Ike Smith, the writer of this episode. I thought every line in this episode was spot on and he truly captured the essence of Kevin’s character. LaRoyce Hawkins was amazing as always!
In just six episodes this is shaping up to be one of the best seasons of CPD ever!
