Wow. Tonight was kind of eye-opening to me.
As I've said before, coming home for the holidays is really about confronting my past and old situations to see how I've grown, and tonight really illustrated that.
I hung out with my old friend group, a bunch of guys who I've been friends with since high school. We've always been pretty smart, but also very cynical; we were all existentialists in high school, and for the most part we haven't really changed; except for me.
From the get-go, I could just feel an energy difference, a clash of energies. But besides that, they were getting very heated about politics and arguing about a slew of subjects and I just found myself very bored and disinterested. I just... didn't care about what they were talking about. I knew that it didn't matter, and that the bickering was also a pointless clash of egos.
Also, their outlooks on life and people are still pretty cynical, which obviously contradicts my own. But their humor also reflects this; (tw) they watched a video of a pufferfish being fed a carrot and asphyxiating, and they were laughing while I was just crushed. My friend tried to reconcile with me, saying that they don't have an advanced-enough nervous system to feel pain; and then he tried telling me that as a Buddhist I should have an understanding of suffering, and that it shouldn't bother me, or something like that; he tried to take what very little he knew of Buddhism to try and turn it on me, which actually kind of made me laugh.
Anyways, it really, really highlighted how much I've changed. I used to be exactly like how they were, maybe even a little bit more so. But I think what really struck me the most was how firm I was in myself. I used to be the pushover of the group, and even awhile ago I would've probably been afraid to have the beliefs that I have and be with them, in fear that I might have to defend them. But tonight I was completely firm and unwavering; I was completely unbothered by how different we were, and I just stood in my own truth; I'm very proud of myself.
Anyways, that's it for now. Happy Holidays!
Blessings!
