Hello everyone!! I know it's a bit late, but I wanted to make a post going into some of the details of the cosmology and energetics behind the Year of the Fire Horse from a Chinese Medicine perspective. With this, you'll learn what to expect, and some patterns/themes for the year both on a personal and societal level. You'll also learn how best to act and conduct yourself to help your year be as seamless as possible.
I want to mention that while some of this information is mine, the majority of this information comes from one of my teachers and mentors Michael Berletich, DAOM LAc. He is an incredible acupuncturist and teacher, and every year he has a seminar where he does a deep dive into this stuff. Next year I'll post about it and get the link out to yall, but in the meantime, you get to hear from me instead (:
So without further ado, let's get to it!
So this is the Year of the Yang Fire Horse. We're going to talk about the two aspects of the year - fire, and the horse.
First, let's talk about fire. And this is REALLY important to talk about. Because it's not just a fire year - it's actually a TRIPLE fire year. Yang = Fire. Fire = Fire. Horse = Fire. This is the most fire that a year can possibly be!!
When we think about fire, what are some things that come to mind? First, fire illuminates. Fire literally sheds light on things. This past year was the Year of the Wood Snake, and with that we had many secrets literally being unearthed as it moved forward. There will be more of this this upcoming year, but with it will come with more clarity and understanding.
Speaking of the snake, the other thing that snakes do is shed. They are constantly shedding their skin - and if they can't, they die. So this past year you might've felt and seen that in your life, aspects of yourself and your life literally shedding and falling away to make room for something new.
Now what else does fire do? It BURNS. And in burning, it transforms. And so, we're going to have a continued purging of things that are no longer in alignment with ourselves and our Paths - except that instead of it falling away, it's going to get torched. Definitelyyy a bit more dramatic. And because of the triple fire year - it's going to feel that way.
Dr. Berletich had this suggestion, which I LOVE so much. As we kind of transition into this new year, there is still some time to harness some of that snake energy and work on letting things go and make space for the new year before the horse comes and burns it away lmao. So literally doing some cleaning and clearing of your space is encouraged. But if there are things/emotions/memories/etc that you are having trouble letting go of - writing it down on a piece of paper (wood, like the snake) and then burning it (fire, like the horse) will help with this immensely.
Next, in Chinese Medicine, fire is associated with the Heart. The Heart is the most important organ, and is considered "The Emperor" and rules over all of the other ones. It houses the Shen, or the spirit, and this spirit has a connection to the spirit of the Universe.
The Heart is all about our authentic self, our divine purpose, our Path, etc. - and not just on a personal level, but on a societal one as well. In the Year of the Snake, we have been shedding away things that no longer serve us in preparation for us to come into our true selves and our true purpose - and that is what is happening this year. More on this later.
But because the Heart is associated with spirit and the divine, this year it's extremely important to engage in practices and activities that tend to and cultivate our spirituality. It's not just for your practice - it's self-care.
Emotions play a big role with the Heart, and in Chinese Medicine, if someone is mentally agitated or dysregulated, we actually say that they are "shen disturbed." Fire can very quickly grow out of control if left unchecked, and it can be difficult to bring it back down once it grows out of control. We want to keep the flame of our Hearts steady like a candle, and not like a blazing inferno.
So, this year, it's important to do things that regulate you, and doing things that cultivate your spirit are going to be especially helpful - meditation, tai chi, qigong, energy work, whatever you do in your practice.
Okay, let's pivot now and talk about the horse, of course!
When we think of a horse, what's the first thing that comes to mind? A horse runs, a horse gallops, it is constantly on the move, and it moves quickly.
This will be evident this year - I'm already seeing it in my own life. Things are going to speed up, things are going to be constantly moving, and things are going to HAPPEN. Like my friend said the other day - "this isn't going to be a 'mheh' year. It's going to be a big one, one way or another." This isn't a year for sitting around and waiting for things or watching things happen - it's about ACTION and DOING THINGS. And fire is ENERGY and impetus, like a fire lit under your ass. Remember, this is a triple fire year, the most fire it could possibly be - so it's even moreso. The Universe will be taking action - and you are encouraged to do so as well.
Another thing - don't fall off the horse!! This year is going to be a wild ride, especially with the triple fire. So kind of like we talked about earlier with not letting the fire of our Hearts get out of control, we want to try and stay on the horse and not fall off, even if the ride gets bumpy and crazy. It's important to stay centered and grounded as much as possible.
Horses are like trains - by getting on one, they help us get somewhere soo much faster than we could on our own. This is absolutely to your advantage - utilizing this energy and movement can help us realize ideas and projects that would take longer or be more difficult before. It can also be a good year for expansion and progress - a spark can grow into something bigger very quickly.
But, like a train, if you accidentally get on the wrong one, you will suddenly be in a very different location than you initially intended. So for this year, it's EXTREMELY important that you "look before you leap;" before getting on the train, make sure that it's the right one; before igniting that spark, make sure that the fire that will grow is in the right spot. THINK before you act - don't make any spontaneous or knee-jerk decisions; this can potentially lead you to a place that you don't want to be in. Bonus points for acting from the Heart.
And now, finally, bringing them both together. With so much movement, so much raw power, and so much possibility for sparks to catch on quickly and ignite - Fire Horse years are typically years of revolution, and big change - sparks that catch and quickly ignite, leading to sweeping changes.
The last Fire Horse year was in 1966. In this year, we saw the Vietnam War escalate, a big landmark year in Civil Rights, and in China we saw the Cultural Revolution - big change indeed.
Culturally and societally, many things have come to light in the past year, and as we move into this Year of the Fire Horse, there will almost certainly be movement and change - and likely big change.
The Heart is about unity, and alignment, and love. But fire also has a destructive capacity to raze everything in sight. If our actions are a spark that is going to catch and grow into something bigger, we need to decide for ourselves if we want that spark to grow into unity and oneness, or if it will instead grow into a fire that burns and destroys everything that it touches.
The Heart has Shenming - or spiritual light. All of the light of the universe comes from the Heart. And this year, the Heart is at the most brilliant time that it could be.
So what are you going to do with it?
Thanks so much for reading! I hope that you find this helpful, and you are welcome and encouraged to come back to it throughout the year.
Imitate the trees. Learn to lose in order to recover, and remember that nothing stays the same for long, not even pain, psychic pain. Sit it out. Let it all pass. Let it go.
You've done more work than you realize. I get that you want to hold yourself to a very high standard. That's okay. You're high-fidelity. However, give yourself grace in that your growth takes time. Let it.
Affects: stabilization, grounding, embodiment, heightened senses, craving security and comfort, slow and steady progress, emotional and physical recalibration, increased awareness of finances and material reality, desire for peace and consistency, deep need for rest and nourishment, sensuality, reconnecting with the body, patience, resistance to sudden change, attachment to familiar environments, indulgence in comforts, protecting energy, building long-term foundations, valuing simplicity over chaos
What It’s Good For: meditation, grounding, reconnecting with nature, slowing down and being present, tending to the body and nervous system, catching up on responsibilities at a steady pace, organizing finances and resources, creating stability in your environment, self-care and rest, strengthening self-worth, setting boundaries rooted in value, investing in long-term goals, creative expression that requires patience and dedication, cleansing and comforting your space, releasing resistance to necessary growth, maintaining stability, choosing consistency over intensity
“We must not act like victims, reacting to the consequence of choices we have created for ourselves. People that operate under victim-mode not only feel pain, they protect it (by building a permanent identity around it). They want empathy from others but not to change. Suffering has become their safety because they feed off of the attention their pain gives them.
We cannot abandon our responsibility (as creators of our realities) by assigning blame to anyone, thing or circumstance (this would keep us in the state of fear and powerlessness). The ego thinks that you have to wait for some future moment to change so you can be what you already are. You must stop looking for a particular state or experience that you must have and notice that which is aware of every experience and is already here. You are consciousness and this is your YOU-niverse: it all begins and ends with YOU.”
