ao3 Eddie watches an interaction between Steve and his mom. The whole time all she says are backhanded compliments and little put downs but Steve just smiles at her like nothing is wrong. Eddie brings it up to him later and Steve genuinely didn't know she was being mean to him. It was really sad and basically Steve realizes she doesn't love him like he thought she did and Eddie helps him through it.
