Mazda RX-01
Mazda RX-01 was a concept car unveiled at the 31st Tokyo Motor Show in 1995, representing Mazda’s vision for a “lightweight, affordable, and practical rotary sports car.” The name "RX-01" signifies “Rotary Experimental No.1,” reflecting Mazda's experimental yet forward-looking approach to developing a new generation of sports cars.
Under the hood, it featured a 13B rotary engine similar to that of the RX-7, but with an enhanced 13B-MSP (Multi-Side Port) design aimed at improving combustion efficiency. The car employed a rear-wheel-drive (FR) layout with a 5-speed manual transmission, staying true to the spirit of a genuine sports car. Although the seating was listed as 2+2, it was effectively a two-seater due to its compact and lightweight body, paired with a sleek, futuristic design.
While the RX-01 was seen by some as a spiritual successor to the RX-7 (FD3S), it was based on an entirely new platform, targeting a broader and more accessible market segment. Although it never reached production, the RX-01 heavily influenced the design and philosophy of later models such as the Mazda RX-8 (2003) and the Mazda MX-5 (NC, 2005). Its aesthetic and layout philosophy also echoed in later concept vehicles, including the Mazda Vision Coupe (2017).
