It crept like a predator does it’s prey. Slowly flowing through your veins and changing the way you think. At first you didn’t notice, but The Doctor did. She notices everything, eventually.
Maybe you should’ve said something earlier, when you’d been pricked by one of the plants in the alien forest you were walking through. You didn’t think anything of it. Sometimes you forget that humans react differently to alien beings and objects.
It started with mannerisms, you had developed a twitch in your right hand, making a fist and unclenching it every 10 or so seconds.
You were last in line, behind Yaz. You were walking for a while, about an hour by now, The Doctor turning her head back every so often, making sure you were all there. That must’ve been when she noticed. You were each holding a torch of some sort, enough light around to be able to see the twitch you had acquired. She made a mental note for later.
While you were all walking, the others were discussing the other adventures they’d been on before you joined. It made you jealous, even before this thing had invaded your body. It made you insanely jealous. They’d been laughing and recalling old memories for about 20 minutes before the jealous boiled over and turned into anger.
“Oh my god will you lot just shut up!” It took you a moment to realize what you had just said. The group turned around, in shock.
“Y/N…” Yaz started as she took a step towards you. “are you okay?” You backed up, a hand at your mouth, in shock yourself.
The Doctor gently pushed Ryan out of the way so she could move towards you. “Show me.”
You pulled up your sleeve nervously. The prick you felt earlier had developed into a dark patch on your arm, a deep purple coursing through your veins. The Doctor took your arm gently, getting a closer look. Your heart was racing, her touch was usually what calmed you, but this time, fear was all you felt.
“I didn’t mean to say that,” your own voice broke its silence.
“Of course you didn’t,” She looked into your eyes. “This isn’t you.”
“Doc, what do you mean?” Graham piped up.
“These plants are alive Graham, they’re a living consciousness. Something’s really wrong here and I can’t quite figure out what.” She sighed, and looked up at you. “But I will.”
“Let’s keep going, Yaz keep close to her.”
Yaz let the others stay in front and linked her arm with yours, the side that wasn’t infected.
As you walked, you felt your arm begin to burn, spreading out across your body, your grip on Yaz’s arm tightened and her attention was back on you. You were there, present, but unable to control your own body.
The Doctor quickly moved to the two of you. You pulled away from Yaz and your clenched fist went to meet The Doctor face. She caught your hand.
“You’ll never understand. I’m here, but you don’t see me. You see the others,” you hear your own voice speaking your most secretive thoughts. Things you didn’t know you were thinking. “You never see me.”
She tentatively put a hand on the side of your face. You could feel her touch, it helped you, but only made whatever was taking control of you angry.
“Get off me,” your voice lowered. Violently brushing off her hand on your face.
“Y/N, I know you’re in there.” The Doctor said softly, “I need you stay strong now. We’ll fix this, I promise.” The Doctor pulled out her sonic and directed it at you.
“I’m sorry,” The Doctor spoke quietly as she pressed the button. You feel your body gradually relax.
“What are you doing?” your voice angrily slurred. “What have y-“
Although it went dark, you could still hear as you were fighting for power of your own body.
“What did you do?” Yaz frowned.
“Give me a hand Ryan,” He helped pick you up and they continued to walk.
“Increased her melatonin levels by accelerating her body clock. Essentially, I made her sleep.”
“How long for?” Graham said.
“Usually I’d say 8 hours, but with whatever’s inside her, 1 maybe 2.” The Doctor had spotted a building. “There it is, not far now.”
The power of this being was overwhelming you. You were either getting weaker, or it was getting stronger. You didn’t know, but you were losing hope, which only caused you to gradually allow the being to take over.
When the group arrived at the building, it was abandoned.
“Looks like a science lab,” The Doctor said, pushing left over materials off of one of the beds. “Put her down here,” she ushered Ryan over and had him lay her down.
The Doctor stared at your sleeping body and frowned. She was worried, hoping you’d have the strength to hold on.
“What do we do?” Yaz said. “What happens when she wakes up?”
“Well,” The Doctor started. “First we find out what happened here. These plants were never conscious.”
“Okay, but what about Y/N?” Yaz started. “Something’s taking over her body. Surly she can’t hold on much longer.”
“She’s strong, she’ll be okay.”
“How do you know that?” Yaz snapped.
“Yaz..she’s doin’ her best.” Graham said softly.
“Because she’s Y/N and she’s been through worse.” The Doctor spoke. A look from Yaz caused her to sigh and explain further. “If we don’t get whatever living consciousness is possessing her out of her within the next, oh I don’t know, half an hour? Her mind, her consciousness, will die.”
“We can’t let that happen.” Tears began to form in Yaz’s eyes. The Doctor walked towards her and held her shoulders.
“We won’t,” She tried to comfort Yaz. “We’ll get our Y/N back. I swear.” A soft smile formed on The Doctor’s face. “Now, whatever’s happened, started here I’m betting, so-“ The Doctor started walking around the room, collecting files and papers. She went over to the filing cabinet and sonic’d it open, pulling out every document and dumping it onto a work surface “Let’s get reading.”
