14.04 sams story at the end of the episode which comes at deans persistent insistence to give him a reason why sam doesnt like halloween that isnt ‘our every day is halloween’ and i think (whether this experience actually happened or not) sam provides a story (importantly in an episode where we see deans attachment to stories- horror movies where the hero wins, but also to set roles and to set lines and to concepts he can digest) and this story presents a scene dean can relate to (a girl sam liked, a party, pre-series which is an idealized time) that which does NOT challenge hunting or remove them from the idealistic hero vs bad guy mindset dean prefers. that we KNOW from the pilot sam does not like halloween and this has not been accepted by dean is vital to the sudden and careful relation of this young sam throwing up on a girl he liked in their childhood. dean gets his ‘nerdy helpless little brother’ gets to be ‘big brother’ who cheers him up and sams true feelings, while denied, are no longer put on the butchers block for dismantling because dean doesnt accept them
