There’s an old adage that says, you can’t go home again. Louis Tomlinson seems intent on disproving that, with new single ‘Palaces’ taking him both figuratively – and sonically – to his roots.
A song that deals with a homecoming, ‘Palaces’ switches between the pressures of fame and the need to feel grounded, and speaks to Louis Tomlinson’s maturity, and his honesty.
Following recent single ‘Lemonade’ – the first blast from incoming album ‘How Did I Get Here?’, due out on January 23rd – the track hitches itself on the kind of unashamedly catchy guitar pop Louis Tomlinson has made his own.
A terrific, finessed piece of melodic indie, there’s a real sense of theatre and drama to the vocal, with Louis Tomlinson giving it his own.
Notably written and recorded right here in the UK, ‘Palaces’ is the sound of Louis Tomlinson speaking on his truth. Whether it’s having a ball at Glastonbury or covering Hozier’s ‘Too Sweet’ for Radio 1’s Live Lounge, he seems determined to honour his instincts.
With a headline spot at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball coming up, these are heady days for the pop star, another peak in a rollercoaster career. He sings:
“I’m lost in the time, I don’t care for the world outside, you can stay through the night in the palaces of my mind.”
Our mark? 8/10
