Character Writing Exercises

I was going to make this a tagging game & include my taglist, but it's pretty involved and I don't want anyone to feel pressured to do it if it's a chore/they don't want to/it's not helpful to them.

Below are some exercises I find really, really useful for pulling brand new characters out of my ass. Barring that, they're fun to do for existing characters as well!

Paint a picture of a character by describing their bedroom while they’re not in it.

Whip up a new one right now, fall back on a tried and true OC. Or a canon character; I’m not the boss of you.

Shuffle a playlist on your music player of choice. For whichever song plays, describe what you “see” with your imagination.

For those of you who struggle to “see” imagined things, just tell me what’s goin’ on in that beautiful noodle of yours. Also, please tell me the song so I can listen to it while I read this part!

Describe a character by turning out their pockets.

what has it got in its pocketses?

An abandoned and unlocked phone (or wallet, if you wanna go back a coupla decades) has been discovered in a ratty little diner bathroom. What’s in there? What does it tell us about its owner?

Think photos, payment methods, notes, messages, Internet searches, receipts, etc. If cell phones and Waffle Houses aren't things in your character's world, pretend they are.

Nine People I'd Like to Know Better

Last Book: Trading Game by Gary Stevenson. It's about a guy who came from a working class family but got a job as a trader in London's financial district. He became the most successful trader on his floor because he realised that the economy was never going to recover after the 2008 financial crash, despite what everyone else was saying. He now campaigns against wealth inequality.

Last Song: Are You With Me by Lost Frequencies

Last Film: I watched the F1 movie on a long haul flight back in January. I don't watch many films but I'm thinking about watching Call Me By Your Name after hearing about it from Gabico shippers.

Last Series: I don't watch many series either...I started watching the new season of Drive To Survive but I'll probably skip big chunks of it.

Last Video Game: i recently bought Dorfromantik, which had been on my Steam wishlist for ages. I thought the combination of logic and creativity was going to be right up my street but it wasn't as compelling as I thought it would be. Maybe I'm not much in the mood for video games these days. I haven't played much in the last couple of years, even TS4 which is my go-to.

Sweet or salty: I have a huge sweet tooth but since sweets lead to more sweet cravings I really limit it. I like salty/savoury things too.

Coffee or Tea: I like both but coffee edges out for me. Again, I would drink a lot more of it if it didn't mess with my sleep so much.

Working on:

An original WIP. It's a childrens' fantasy titled Doves. I've been working on it for about 3 years now and this year I plan to submit it for publication. However, it still needs quite a bit of editing and I'm at the stage where I'm kinda sick of looking at it :/

A Gabico office AU. Normally when I write fic I put out each chapter as I've written it but this time I want to finish at least the whole of Part 1 before I publish it. I want to make sure it's well written in favour of chasing the achievement-dopamine-hit.

An epic Camerband soulmates fic. I spent a huge part of last year writing it and it's only half done. I decided to take a break from it at the end of last year to focus on my OG work but I just ended up writing other fic (see above). I do want to finish it.

Seven Sentences Sunday (more like Wednesday)

I'm finding myself furiously writing fix-it fic after fix-it fic, and this one is my latest ficlet. It's almost done now, and I am a little... nervous about it? Actually more like confused, because it's so different from literally everything else I've ever written.

And then, when hope has grown thin as spider silk, he comes. Pale and hollow, bearing apologies and offers of friendship, and the temple settles, content to serve the purpose for which it was intended. The god who is no god sits at the table chosen for him, speaks with the man who waited for him, his supplicant.  The inn sings in contentment, its long vigil rewarded, a dream granted to a dreamer, at last. But even dreams must end. Now the inn stands bereft, as echoes of last conversations and farewells linger in its rooms, seeping into stone and brick, along with the grief of a man who has lost a friend, of a temple that has lost its god. The man is called Hob Gadling, and he loves a dream that wore the shape of a man, pale of skin and dark of hair, with eyes that shone like stars.
