also i know u prefer watsonian explanations but adam staying in the cage is one of those things that imo requires some knowledge of the behind the scenes reasons. like the reason death made dean choose is bc jake abel's agent kept saying no without telling jake abel and jake abel said "absolutely" when he finally heard about it.

like at that point the writers were like "obviously dean would demand adam being free but jake abel ISNT ANSWERING OUR CALLS so let's have death force the choice to make it clear it's not dean's fault"
