On Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 8 PM EST the Crossfit open began. The Crossfit Games Director, Dave Castro, announced live to over 160,000 athletes who registered to compete the open, the first workout 15.1 and 15.1a. The 2015 Open kicked off with a workout of 9 Min AMRAP of 15 Toe to Bars(T2B), 10 Deadlifts, and 5 Snatches (Men 115 lbs/ Women 75 lbs) This workout alone sounds taxing but very doable and exciting as it is a traditional Crossfit triplet with movement and weights all crossfitters are familiar with. Your initial thought to this workout is that this is a good one people can push themselves to their physical limits. The competitive nature gets intrigued and adrenaline starts pumping.
In typical Dave Castro fashion, there was more. Workout 15.1 and 15.1a are scored differently. Immediately after 15.1 you are given 6 minutes to establish your 1 rep max of clean and jerk. This is when things gets spicy. The clean and jerk is a very popular Olympic lift but to establish a 1 rep max after a tiring 9 min AMRAP triplet means you have to struggle with gripping the barbell. The AMRAP eats away at your grip strength leaving you vulnerable to having the bar fly out your hands. Nonetheless, you can expect a lot of personal records and amazing feats of strength to take place during the 15.1A workout.
Overall, it was a fantastic way to start the open. 15.1 and 15.1a are the type of workouts that will get you excited and determined to give it everything you got, leaving you physically drained when it’s all over. It’s an intense 15 minutes of Crossfit action. The top 60 men in the world all accomplished at least 210 reps for 15.1 and 315lbs for 15.1a. The top 60 women in the world all accomplished at least 210 reps for 15.1 and 205lbs for 15.1a. Winners of the 2014 Crossfit games, Rich Froning and Camille Leblanc-Bazinet both are in 2nd place. Get excited for next week’s 15.2 workout.
