‘I’ll arm wrestle you for my Milo!’
In 1945 Nestlé began making Milo in Chile, and positioned the brand locally as a product that, as part of a balanced breakfast, would give children the energy they needed for a better start to the day. 1.3 million cups of Milo are now drunk in Chile every day.
THE POWER OF CHOCOLATE POWDER
By 1954 Nestlé’s Quik was already the most popular cocoa powder in the US. The brand expanded into Canada and Cuba in 1955, the UK and Australia in 1957, South Africa in 1958. Under the Nesquik name it was also launched in mainland Europe towards the end of the decade.
Handmade pasta with passion
In 1827 Giulia Boninsegni Buitoni, known as ‘Mamma Giuli’, and her husband began selling pasta from their small shop in Sansepolcro, Tuscany, Italy. Without using machines, but driven by their passion to develop a quality product, they developed a special pasta made from local durum wheat, with an improved flavour, consistency and shelf life.
Sun-kissed Italian refreshment
The Sanpellegrino Company was founded in 1899 in Italy. In the following year it produced more than 35,000 bottles of mineral water. In 1932 the company diversified by launching San Pellegrino Aranciata, a refreshing soft drink containing real orange juice and orange peel.
Ice creams for everybody!
In 1965 Nestlé bought the Chilean ice cream brand Savory. Its most popular products were ‘Chocolito’, ‘Cremino’ and ‘Lolly Pop’, which are still firm favourites among the Chilean people.
FROM CANS TO CAPSULES
In 1968 you could crack open ready-to-drink Nestea in aluminium cans. And within four years it was our most important U.S, brand. Today Nestea is sold across the world, and you can even slot a capsule into your Nescafé Dolce Gusto machine!
Chocolate with honey? Watch out for the bees!
Tough competition can help bring the best out of people and businesses. In 1936 a tight Swiss chocolate market inspired Nestlé-Peter-Cailler-Kohler to innovate by launching Galak white chocolate, followed by Rayon, a chocolate with honey and air bubbles, the following year.
