Original version of the great #16hp for the late great #cakemagazine in 1996. With #davideugeneedwards from the also great @wovenhandband #portraits #musicphotography (at Minneapolis, Minnesota)
Wovenhand Schorndorf April 17, 2015
My second and third most-played albums of the year 2000 were Modest Mouse’s The Moon & Antarctica and 16 Horsepower’s Secret South (#1 was Poster Children’s DDD). Still, there is exactly zero chance that I would have said then that fifteen years later I would be more excited about new music from 16HP/Wovenhand frontman David Eugene Edwards than from Isaac Brock, and yet that’s the future I find myself living. Brock and Edwards at their best both stare death in the face and laugh, but Edwards’ apocalypse has only grown more intense while Brock’s, er, floats on, all right? “Hiss” is merely the best of the ragged ragers on Wovenhand’s latest and best release, Refractory Obdurate, completing the band’s decade-long transformation from rustic art-folk to relentless post-punk.
