Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 16X05
I really liked this episode! I liked that it was fast paced and that we got movement on a lot of the pre-existing storylines. The episode opens with another one of Meredith’s weird dreams! We then find out that Zola isn't feeling well at all. Her symptoms progressively get worse so Meredith decides to take her to Grey Sloan. We find out that Zola's shunt needs to be repaired and readjusted because she's growing. After doing a CT scan Meredith asks Koracick to perform the surgery with DeLuca and Helm scrubbing in.
I loved that Maggie and Amelia were there to support and comfort Mer as they waited for Zola to come out of surgery and tried to distract her with their own problems. Something I didn’t like was that DeLuca kept trying to be Mer's boyfriend even though they've broken up, when what she really needed was a surgeon! A surgeon who could help operate on her sick daughter.
I really liked Mer's conversation with Maggie and Amelia about how DeLuca just doesn't get it because he's not a parent and they're at different stages in their lives. Those issues have been there from the beginning and and I'm glad Mer is finally acknowledging it. I loved Mer's comment about how her and Cristina would've made fun of DeLuca for wanting to act as her 'human tissue'. She doesn't need or want that! As she says, he's fun and sexy but she doesn't know if he'll ever be more than that or if she even wants him to be.
While talking to Meredith and Amelia, Maggie realizes that her true love is surgery and as Meredith says there's nothing wrong with that. We then get a comment from Mer about Cristina which I thought was a cool callback. Cristina's true love is surgery and herself and that's perfectly okay. It looks like Maggie might feel the same way and Mer is there to support her. Right on! Amelia realizes while talking to Meredith and Maggie that she doesn't really know Link even though she's having a baby with him! But she wants to! Her sisters pledge to support her regardless of what happens and I love that!
I love that post-brain tumour Amelia has become self aware of her impulsive actions and can now laugh about them! Caterina is great at comedy and it’s wonderful to see her get to use her range as an actress. Zola's surgery goes well and everything's fine, but we find out that Meredith missed her court date to be there for her so, as we learn at the end of the episode, she's going to have to spend some time in jail! Oh boy!
Meanwhile a patient gets admitted to the hospital and Jo realizes its one of her therapists from the treatment centre! Jo and Bailey treat her in the hyperbaric chamber and boy does the drama ensue! I loved seeing Rachel Bay Jones who plays Kara's mom on God Friended Me as Jo's therapist/patient! Two VERY different roles! Really great acting.
Jo starts freaking out because she thinks the therapist who helped her tried to commit suicide and so she uses the techniques she learned from her to calm herself down. Jo then teaches the same techniques to Bailey so she can calm down about her pregnancy which she reveals to Jo to help distract her. The hyperbaric chamber is an intense place people. I loved that they showed Jo's progress through therapy in flashbacks! Working to better yourself especially after intense trauma is incredibly hard and I love that they are honouring and showing that on screen! I liked the twist at the end where we learned that Jo's therapist wasn't trying to kill herself but instead was the victim of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. We also get to see Jo using the techniques she's learned and setting boundaries which is good.
Elsewhere Richard and Gemma go to breakfast. It goes awry when Gemma hits on Richard and he does not take it well. He makes it clear that even though him and Catherine are having problems he loves her and is not going to cheat on his wife. Gemma calls Richard out on the fact that being married never stopped him from cheating before. Which to be honest is totally true. However, he seems to have learned his lesson (finally) and is 100% not interested. That is until Richard comes home to see that Catherine is back from her trip. She's cold and unfeeling and completely brushes him off. He then gets a text from Gemma apologizing for being out of line. Troubling is a brewing!
Meanwhile, after trying and failing to tell Ben about the pregnancy at the beginning of the episode (he falls asleep poor guy) Bailey finally tells him after paging him to the hospital. At first he looks upset, but then spins her around with happiness! I love them! I loved the scene at the end where Alex comes home and finds out Jo has had a rough day, but instead of shutting him like she used to out she grabs a bag of throw toys and they let off steam by throwing things at the walls/doors of their apartment!
And now onto next week's promo! It's the Halloween episode! I love themed episodes on this show! We see that Mer's in jail and Jo has decided to dress up! Although as Alex says nothing is scarier than his real life! Also is that Jo’s wedding dress she’s repurposed? It kind of looks like it. Bailey drops some truth about 'fun sized' candy bars and construction at Pac North is halted when the crew uncovers a mass grave! Yikes! As Richard says, no wonder the place feels haunted! Meredith, while in Jail, is worried about finding time to get a costume and get home in time to trick or treat with her kids! Priorities vs. privilege seems to be the theme of this storyline! Can't wait to see how it all plays out!
Until next time!
What if instead... 16x5
Penelope [runs to Luke, who is walking along BAU hallway, helping himself with crutches]: He gave me a cat. Luke: What? Who? Penelope: Tyler. He gave me a black rescue little cat, as a peace gift. Luke: Ok... Penelope: I betrayed Sergio and also you. I'm such a stupid, too scared, and I have almost losing you. Luke: Were you worried for me? Penelope: Yes. Because I love you. I mean... I'm in love with you. Luke: Good. But it's too late. You were right. You are a traitor. Go to your Tyler. Penelope [screaming]: No! [Penelope wakes up, finding herself on a uncomfortable chair, in a hospital room] Luke [opens his eyes and sees her]: What... what happened? Where is JJ? Penelope [hurries to catch his hand]: Don't worry, she is okay. [he is too tired, just nods] Want to know who is not okay? [Luke nods again] Me! I... I thought this time I really lost you, and that for my stupid fears I never got the chance to know the taste of your lips and to say that I love you so hard, almost as I hate you to be always the macho hero. You will kill me, sooner or later, you stupid Newb... Luke [puts a finger on her lips to shut her]: This time wasn't my fault. I just followed Emily's instructions. Penelope: I know, but still... Luke: I'm not in the good shape for this. You said you love me? In that way? Penelope [so scared]: Yes, I do. I already love you when we had the date, but you are too much and I was so afraid to ruin everything. Please, forgive me! Luke [too exhausted, about to fall asleep]: You don't need to ask me. Just tell me you will be here the next time I will open my eyes? Penelope [with a soft and sweet smile on her face]: Deal.

Is there a clip of Voit saying "You don't need um, she's your mom" and doing the little teeth chomp from 16.5 Oedipus Wrecks somewhere? I was talking about this episode with a friend who has not seen the season and wanted to send it to her.
"She's ur mom" 😂 still dead. still the best ep so far.
