Fucking hell, Beastars episode 6 was amazing. We’re finally taken out of the school, so rather than just having the story be told in a microcosm of a society, we get to experience a society that’s much greater in scale, and since it’s not just highschoolers anymore there’s a greater variety of people with different histories and experiences and stuff. In particular, we’re taken to this black market where we meet 2 very interesting individuals, the first a homeless goat selling his fingers to carnivores, priced on a per finger basis according to size, and by god if that’s not a tragic and fucked up sight. The second, an older panda doctor that’s shredded as fuck and voiced by Akio Ohtsuka, who takes in Legosi briefly to tell him about the dangers and consequences of giving into his carnivore instincts. Between the extreme self harm, fur loss from stress, and even eating their own limbs for a taste of meat, it’s pretty fucked, and I think the way it parallels drug addiction is extremely fascinating, particularly since the carnivore’s desire to eat meat is an inherent desire that needs to be repulsed, whereas drugs are a temptation, and it’s only when you’ve tried it once do you have that “need” to go back to it. But then Legosi actually has bitten into a herbivore before, so like, I mean there’s just kind of a lot of directions this could go in. Also being in the city means we can get some different visuals than what we’ve had before - this show’s visuals are great and they’ve managed to keep things really varied even in the school setting alone, but like the out-of-focus city lights in the last scene between Legosi and Aoba, that’s super pretty, fuck I respect this show’s visuals a lot. Great episode as always.
