In an attempt to focus on an input driven focus, I made a mind map to understand what I care about. This is to keep in focus and aim at designing things that I care about.
The picture shows my mind map.
My processes during discussion with Un(known) group
Un(known) process for prototype. -Discussion on technology -Defining the phases of technologies of interest to the group -Discussing the archetypes of privacy -Mindmap -Discuss -Ideation -Refine -Product -Repeat processes from Discussion to products -Statements(decide on making statement instead of a ready to go product) -Make Prototype -Material Gathering -Present to class
Reflexivity. The ability to reflect on myself will be a good way to guide the research, Consent is key. Ethics is vital to anthropology. There is a constant reflection on ethics and it depends on every case and it can vary depending on the case. Do people know what I am doing with the research? As a designer do I do what people want or do what the research tells me to do ? ( maybe safety vs aesthetics of a product) Case Analysis: Iphone 7 (right side of the picture) The camera was just an accessory for a phone, but as demand for better pictures rose among the people, the design catered to the wants of the users. They had portrait mode and better quality cameras on both the front and back of the phone. This allows everyone to take clear and expressive photos. Thoughts: Does research benefit design process? Thoughts during group discussion: What do people want to know? Are we as a society afraid of the truth? Is it possible to gain the trust of the people and get the truth? I should research conspiracy theories on privacy.
Notes on the Ethnography lecture
My understanding of ethnography lecture. Ethnography is a method of research within Anthropology. Asking clear questions and understanding your target audience and guide the research well. The subjectivity of the research can be an added value. i.e, if you care for the topic, the research will be more interesting and seem more purposeful. It is important to understand and realize the information required. You have to be clear what you want to know and being specific on a broad topic helps to gain focus on the path of the research. Observing People in a public space is okay, but observing people in an organization like a clinic for example is unacceptable as this is deemed unethical. The organization that you want to hold this research should give you consent to do so. Question: If sociology is the study of relationships between people in a society, then why is tribal culture not being considered into the study? it is a group of people having relationships among a society. The answer to this after speaking with Anna: Usually sociology studies are centered around an urban environment. There have been studies done on tribal cultures and relationships in that environment, but it is usually about the modern day society. My thoughts on the answer: I get it. It is actually a study that can influence modern day society. As tribal cultures are in the shadows away from the urban environment, studies on their relationships have a lower chance of impacting today’s society.
